As the New Year approaches, many struggle to maintain resolutions—much like the challenge of making it to midnight on New Year’s Eve. Each year, I commit to exercising regularly. I truly do! For about three days, that is. Then life becomes hectic, the kids fall ill, or laundry piles up, and my fitness goals fade away before I can even remember what my abs look like. I know I’m not alone in this predicament. Keeping resolutions is already tough, but parenting adds an extra layer of complexity that makes self-care seem nearly impossible.
This year, however, I’m setting a different kind of resolution—one that I can realistically uphold. I’m dedicated to engaging my children in discussions about responsible alcohol consumption. Research indicates that parents significantly shape their children’s choices regarding drinking. Yes, as surprising as it may seem, we do have an impact. Although kids often pretend not to hear us, they are, in fact, attentive. Starting conversations about making wise choices regarding alcohol as early as age six is crucial for deterring underage drinking. It’s a matter of initiating a dialogue—one conversation or several, as it truly is an ongoing exchange.
Join me, alongside Responsibility.org and a community of fellow bloggers, in committing to have these conversations with our children about alcohol. This is a resolution we can all keep. Who needs the gym, right?
Reflecting on the past year of parenting, if your experiences mirrored mine, you likely faced a mountain of laundry, tackled numerous messes, and perhaps rewarded yourself at the week’s end with a (responsible) glass of wine. Here’s to hoping you can stay awake past 9 p.m. this New Year’s Eve.

In summary, as parents, we can prioritize meaningful discussions about responsible drinking with our children, making this a resolution worth keeping.
