In my life, I’ve often reflected on the struggles faced by my grandmother, who, as a Portuguese immigrant in Florida during the Jim Crow era, was repeatedly asked to leave establishments simply because of her beautifully bronzed skin.

Similarly, my son, born to a father with pale skin and blue eyes, came into the world with his own radiant complexion and tightly coiled black hair. Despite the striking resemblance he shares with his lighter-skinned sisters, he has frequently been questioned by adults about the disparity in their skin tones. This reality highlights the urgent need to move beyond color-based perceptions and embrace our shared humanity. I want my children to grow up in a world where they are not pigeonholed for someone’s ideological ease.

I am the proud mother of two fierce daughters, destined to ignite change in this world, and they require no one’s approval to do so.

As a blue-haired, 43-year-old woman married to a lifelong Republican, I often find myself navigating the complexities of love and politics. My husband, although hesitant to fully engage in this election cycle, chooses to support my journey rather than remain uninvolved.

Having been raised by teenage parents who struggled to make ends meet, relying on food assistance while living in a cramped space above a women’s shelter, I now find myself in the top 1% of earners. This experience has taught me that one’s circumstances do not define their worth, ambition, or intelligence; everyone deserves an opportunity to thrive.

I remain hopeful that despite the overwhelming support for Trump among our friends—often motivated by financial concerns—they will ultimately recognize their true convictions and support a different candidate.

In a time marked by hate and division, I choose to prioritize love and hope. I believe that she is capable of leading us forward (and I admit, I feel a paralyzing fear in sharing this sentiment, worried it might jinx her).

I stand united with you. I. Stand. With. Her.
