As a child, the messages I received about leadership were stark and clear. My brothers and father often insisted that a woman could never ascend to the presidency. They believed women to be too emotional, too erratic, and lacking the necessary knowledge. In contrast, my mother was the true pillar of strength in our family. She was the one who held everything together when my father faced legal troubles, ensuring her children pursued higher education despite her own limitations. She endured hardship with grace, rising above the violence she faced and doing what needed to be done.
I made it my goal to surpass my brothers’ impressive academic achievements. I focused on improving my grades, maximizing my test scores, and securing the best scholarship for a prestigious college. Yet, despite my efforts, their respect eluded me, and they never acknowledged that a woman could be a capable leader (and still don’t).
On Tuesday, I will don white with pride. I will shed tears as I cast my vote for a candidate who is not only qualified but also a woman.
