As I reflect on this past year, I find myself in awe of our son, Leo, who celebrates his first birthday today. The memory of seeing him for the first time—vulnerable yet vibrant, crying with life—will forever resonate within me. That moment filled me with an indescribable wonder that I will always cherish.
A quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson has guided me throughout my life: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” It seems fitting that Leo’s arrival has coincided with my desire to carve out our unique journey.
At birth, Leo was diagnosed with achondroplasia, the most prevalent form of dwarfism. I previously shared my experiences surrounding his birth and the emotional journey that followed.
Becoming a parent is a continuous series of firsts: witnessing your child smile, sharing laughter, or seeing them take their first steps. Initially, I believed I would impart countless lessons to Leo. However, over the past year, I’ve found that Leo is the one teaching me invaluable lessons about unconditional love, pure joy, and the unexpected blessings life can bring.
Three Essential Life Lessons from Leo
On this milestone birthday, I’ve identified three essential life lessons that Leo has imparted:
- Embrace Individuality
Each person is inherently unique, with distinct experiences and perspectives. While many milestones are shared—such as first words or school days—Leo’s journey may take him down a different path. Instead of playing on a traditional sports team, he may excel in the Paralympics. This realization has emerged sooner than it might for a parent of a typical child. I see this as a blessing; we are all designed to navigate life in our own way, and Leo’s path will be uniquely his own, rich with its own experiences. I find joy in this individuality. - Adapt to Different Journeys
It can be tempting to want your child to achieve milestones sooner or better than their peers. The pressure to compare development to other children can lead to feelings of jealousy, anxiety, and frustration when faced with social media portrayals of typical growth. This past year has brought these emotions to the forefront for me. Then I observe Leo, gracefully army crawling across the floor, and I am reminded of the beauty in his unique journey. His determination and innovative spirit will enable him to approach challenges with creativity and resilience that many might not foresee. I acknowledge these emotions but release them, choosing instead to celebrate Leo’s milestones as they come in their own special ways. - Live Authentically
Leo radiates joy. His laughter and exploratory nature remind me how simple life can be when we allow ourselves to experience it fully. As adults, we often let the noise of life dull our joy and obscure our experiences. I hope that Leo retains this purity of spirit and appreciation for life. He is teaching me to embrace my own experiences and find joy in the little things.
Life is fulfilling when you carve your own path. Those unique narratives are the ones that enrich our lives. Happy birthday, Leo! Thank you for the lessons you have shared this past year. I aspire to reciprocate the gifts you’ve given me.
I am also grateful to my wonderful partner, Mia, for her support throughout this journey. Both Leo and I are fortunate to have you by our side.
