Dear Children: Please Remain Out of My… Everything

Ah, children. What a delightful blessing, aren’t they? Do you recall the days before parenthood? When acquiring nice things was as simple as a trip to the store? Back then, those cherished possessions remained exactly where we placed them—untouched and whole. What a lovely time that was.

Now, however, our homes, vehicles, and yes, even our sanity seem to be in a constant state of upheaval. One must wonder how it is possible that my offspring possess an uncanny ability to seek out and obliterate anything I hold dear.

Thus, I have resolved to pen an “open letter” to my children. Not that it will be read, of course; they excel at opening things, yet closing them remains an enigma. This letter will, likely, be forgotten in a matter of days—much like the contents of my pantry. But here goes; perhaps I simply enjoy my own company.

My beloved children,

You are the light of my life and the very reason for my joy. Yet, you are also the root of my daily chaos. I envisioned motherhood transforming me into a selfless being, dedicated entirely to your needs; that was not the case. Believe it or not, some things are still mine. Here are a few areas I’d appreciate you steering clear of:

My Bedroom

Admittedly, I once welcomed your tiny, pajama-clad forms into my bed. However, you have grown—now towering at nearly six feet tall. The nighttime antics of sweating, drooling, and the occasional ear bite have turned my peaceful slumber into a boxing match.

My Guest Bathroom

This serene space represents a sliver of my pre-parenthood life. With its pristine decor and luxurious soaps, it is a sanctuary I cherish. Yet, you seem to think it is a personal play area. Coming home from school to find you creating “Barbie soup” in the sink or neglecting to flush after using the toilet makes my eye twitch. You have your own bathroom, after all!

My Handbag

Your frequent rummaging for my phone or loose change has turned my purse into a repository for half-eaten snacks and other debris. It is not your personal trash can. If you enjoy the thrill of discovering banana mush, you might just be destined for parenthood!

My Phone

Why is it that my phone is perpetually dead? Oh right—because whenever I attempt to have an adult conversation, you are on my phone streaming videos or capturing yet another selfie. Thanks for that.

My Makeup

This is largely directed at my daughter, of course. Unless my son suddenly decides to explore a Goth aesthetic.

My Premium Chocolate

Please, indulge in the Tootsie Rolls left over from last Halloween and spare my exquisite Swiss truffles. Trust me, you won’t enjoy them; they are far too extravagant for your palate.

My Dinner Plate

No matter what I’m eating, you will inevitably want a taste. Even if it’s something you’ve previously detested. Thank you for returning your rejected bites to my plate; it’s just what I needed for my latest diet plan.

My Good Scissors

Once, I had a magnificent pair of scissors. Now, I’m left with a pair of safety scissors that appear to have been dipped in banana goo—perfect for clipping coupons, I suppose.

My Adult Conversations

It’s rather challenging to provide support to a friend during a difficult time when you are vocally demanding my attention over your restroom escapades. Why is it that you only need me when I’m on the phone or attempting to have a moment of peace?

Years from now, as I sit in my rocking chair, you may reminisce about the chaos caused in our home. Perhaps you’ll express regret for the turmoil inflicted upon my once orderly life. In years to come, I hope you’ll visit and perhaps even bless me with grandchildren who will continue this illustrious cycle.

With love,
Mom

In summary, this humorous letter encapsulates the trials and tribulations of parenthood, highlighting the precious yet chaotic relationship between parents and their children. It captures the longing for personal space and the often-overlooked aspects of adult life when surrounded by the joyful chaos of family.
