As a rural mom, I often find myself enviously eyeing my urban and suburban friends. They have access to Wi-Fi, Starbucks, well-lit streets, and sidewalks. It’s been ages since I’ve stepped foot on a sidewalk, living in such a remote area. I can’t help but fantasize about drive-thru grocery stores and the joys of living on a cul-de-sac where my kids can safely ride their bikes and shoot hoops. The green-eyed monster really comes out when I think about the evenings my urban friends spend on girls’ nights out at local bars.

In contrast, my life in the countryside is filled with encounters with local wildlife, including bears and moose (I’m serious!). We endure mud season and black fly season, but despite the occasional feelings of isolation, there are several delightful aspects of rural motherhood that urban moms often miss out on. Here are ten things I can indulge in:

  1. Nude Sunbathing – When the kids are away, I can soak up the sun in the nude. Just a quick slather of DEET is needed to ward off the insects. Plus, no tan lines!
  2. Bulk Alcohol Purchases – With the closest grocery store a half-hour away, it’s practically mandatory to buy alcohol in bulk. Hello, convenient boxes of wine!
  3. Freedom of Noise – My kids can let loose with screams and laughter without a neighbor in sight. They can’t hear me belting out Adele’s hits while I tend to my garden.
  4. Casual School Drop-offs – Nobody cares about my wardrobe when dropping the kids off at school. Flannel shirts and well-loved yoga pants are the norm, and most kids take the bus anyway. I can just throw on a coat over my pajamas for a quick trip to the mailbox.
  5. Outdoor Play – Allowing my kids to climb trees or play outside unsupervised is perfectly acceptable. I can sip my coffee while they swing on a tire in the yard—how scandalous!
  6. Laundry Freedom – I can hang my laundry outside without fear of judgment from neighbors. No one will bat an eye at my period panties flapping in the breeze.
  7. Low-Curb Appeal Pressure – Curb appeal is a relaxed concept here. A few strategically placed hedges and a mailbox hanging from a tree suffice to keep things simple.
  8. Treasure Hunting at the Dump – Living without trash pickup means I frequent our local dump, which has a “second-time around” section. I’ve discovered all kinds of treasures to upcycle, from mason jars to patio furniture. If only we had Wi-Fi for some Pinterest inspiration!
  9. All-Day Playdates – Playdates at my house can stretch on for hours, often resembling a mix of camping and daycare. Parents sip wine and snack while kids get muddy and tired from playing outside.
  10. Nature Exploration – Picking up snakes, frogs, bugs, or bird nests is just part of our daily life. Our porch has become a showcase for nature enthusiasts.

While the perks of rural living are numerous, I still occasionally find myself longing for the conveniences my urban friends enjoy. There are days when I’d gladly trade the tranquility of nature for the hustle and bustle of city life.
