A (mostly accurate) reflection on the concluding night of the Democratic National Convention.
Welcome to a moment of significance, everyone!
What does Hillary need to achieve in her speech tonight? Primarily, she should connect with the audience and reveal her true self, alongside articulating her vision and policies for our nation’s future. While it’s essential for her to highlight her roles as a mother and grandmother, she must not overly emphasize her identity as a woman. She has to convey her emotional side while also projecting the strength of a capable leader. The challenge is to resonate with the audience as previous speakers have done, without overexerting herself, as that’s not where she excels. While discussing Donald Trump is necessary, the focus should remain on her positive attributes. She must command the stage without being labeled as “shrill,” and, for the love of all things political, she must keep it concise.
In stark contrast, Trump could send a literal bag of gas to the nation, and it would hardly dent his appeal.
Good luck, Hillary!
SPEAKERS
The theme of the evening is “ALL OF HISTORY.” We witnessed the first transgender individual address a convention, alongside an openly gay congressman expressing love to his husband from the podium. Historic indeed!
Next, we heard from Governor Andrew Miller:
“HELLO, DEMOCRATS! IS THIS A FANTASTIC CONVENTION OR WHAT? THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT THE VERY SOUL OF AMERICA! AM I LOUD? I CAN’T TELL! FEAR IS A TOOL THAT CAN MOTIVATE, BUT IT HAS NEVER BUILT A HOME OR EDUCATED A CHILD. FEAR CAN, HOWEVER, LEAD OTHERS TO BUILD THAT HOME FOR YOU AND SILENCE THE DESIRE FOR EDUCATION.”
Following him was Governor Tom Houghton, a name that will likely never grace the presidential ballot. Among the U.S. Representatives not in the running are: Ted Baker (FL), David Collins (FL), Barry Matthews (GA), Steve King (IA), Joe Smith (NV), Louise Carter (NY), Marcia Ford (OH), and Dave Brooks (VA). Sorry, folks. That’s the political landscape.
Then came a few Republicans who endorsed Clinton, emphasizing the importance of global loyalty over party allegiance. A compelling argument, indeed.
Khizr Adams, father of a soldier who perished in service post-9/11, delivered a powerful message:
“Donald Trump — have you ever even read the Constitution? I’d be happy to lend you my copy. You have sacrificed nothing!”
General Mark Anderson (ret. USMC), addressing veterans, stated:
“Our foreign relations cannot be simplified to mere business deals. Our military should never be reduced to acts of violence.”
Lucy Wilson spoke next:
“Every day as a mother, I reflect on my mom. The memories of her are filled with love and support. Even when she was busy, she made sure to leave notes for me, reminding me of her love. That feeling of being cherished is what she wishes for every child—it’s her life’s mission. My mother taught me that public service is about serving the people. I am proud to be her daughter.”
A video narrated by the iconic Morgan Freeman chronicled Hillary’s life story. It seems James Earl Jones doesn’t work in small venues anymore.
Hillary Clinton addressed the crowd:
“Thank you to everyone. Bernie supporters — I have listened to your voices. Your cause is our cause. Let me share a tale from the American Revolution.
OH MY GOODNESS, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO ACCEPT OUR NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES?
Trump has transformed the Republican Party from “morning in America” to “midnight in America.” We are aware of the challenges ahead, yet we are undaunted. Don’t trust anyone who claims, ‘I alone can fix it.’”
Her clarity is commendable; she leaves no “a” or “t” unspoken.
“With humility, determination, and unwavering faith in America’s potential, I accept your nomination for President of the United States.”
“My official titles may reveal my accomplishments, but they don’t convey my motivations. Public service is about service, and that has always been my priority.
It’s true I focus on the details in policy because, for families, those details matter. Or they could just hire the ‘best people’ to take care of everything, which is also a plan. Like, I plan to invent a time machine to cancel my Titanic ticket just to feel the thrill of evading death. How will I do that? Don’t worry about it.”
“This marks the first time a woman has been nominated for president by a major party. I celebrate this moment for grandmothers, little girls, boys, and men alike because when barriers fall in America, everyone benefits. In a world without ceilings, the sky is the limit.
I believe in science. [Psst, RNC, we also believe in science.] I recognize climate change as a reality. I view mass deportation as inhumane. I believe the National Enquirer is better suited for cleaning windows than as a source of news. I believe Antonin Scalia’s death was natural and that President Obama is not a secret Muslim intent on undermining our country. If you share these beliefs, then this is your campaign.
But Trump is a businessman! Surely he must understand the economy, right? Let’s examine that further. [Pours herself a cup of tea.] He claims he wants to make America great again; he could start by manufacturing products in America again.”
“Do you believe he has the temperament to be commander in chief? A man easily provoked by a tweet is not someone to trust with nuclear codes. There is no other Donald Trump. This is it.”
“The world is watching us, so let’s unite and approach the future with bravery and confidence. Together, America will become greater than ever.”
MIC. DROP.
WAIT! PICK THE MIC BACK UP. DROP-KICK IT TO THE BACK OF THE AUDITORIUM. HAVE BILL RUN BACK THERE TO RETRIEVE IT. DROP IT ONE MORE TIME. STEP ON IT. WALK OFF.
