On a chilly winter evening, my sister and her partner visited to share some exciting news: they were expecting a child. While I was eager to welcome their little one and thrilled for my sister, what truly filled me with joy was the thought that my own kids—then just 7 months and 2 years old—would have the chance to grow up alongside their cousins, a privilege I lacked during my own childhood.
Fast forward over nine years, and our family now includes seven children among my two sisters and me. Witnessing this journey together has enriched our lives immeasurably. Here are some of the invaluable gifts that come from growing up with cousins:
- Stronger Sisterly Bonds
We gather like a swarm of fish, watching our children play while sharing the ups and downs of parenting—discussing everything from childbirth to tantrums. My sisters provide honest feedback when I seek their opinions, never sugarcoating the truth. More importantly, they offer a much-needed escape, reminding each other when we need a break from the chaos of motherhood. - Safe Sleepovers
My children are able to enjoy the fun of sleepovers, and I feel completely at ease knowing they are safe. I don’t have to send countless texts checking in; my sisters know I appreciate a few reassuring updates, often sending pictures of the kids having a great time. They’re also quick to let me know when it’s time to pick up my little ones. - Unbreakable Connections
Since they’ve grown up together, my kids share a bond that goes beyond mere friendship. They genuinely enjoy each other’s company without the typical sibling annoyances. My daughter, who doesn’t have a sister, has formed a deep friendship with her cousin, complete with plans to be each other’s maid of honor and a shared secret language. - A Supportive Tribe
When one cousin is in trouble, the others rally around. They quickly learn that messing with one means facing the whole group, especially when it comes to defending the younger ones. It’s a lesson no child will forget easily. - Shared Understanding
As they mature, they will inevitably encounter family dysfunction, something that’s a common thread in many households. They will have a safe space to express their feelings and share their experiences, knowing that their cousin will understand exactly what they mean when they say, “Why did Aunt Lisa explode again? She needs to get it together.”
I’m not rushing their childhoods, but I eagerly anticipate the day they reflect on their shared experiences. I suspect they will agree that growing up together has meant everything.

Summary
Growing up with cousins creates unique bonds, strengthens family ties, and provides children with a supportive network. The shared experiences and understanding they develop pave the way for lifelong friendships, ensuring they are never alone in navigating life’s challenges.
