A few years back, I accompanied my son, Leo, to his inaugural parade, conveniently located just a couple of blocks from our home. The short walk made it an ideal outing, allowing for a quick exit if he found it overwhelming.
On the main parade route, a local church had organized a complimentary carnival on their lawn, featuring snow cones, face painting, and a large inflatable obstacle course. The obstacle course had two entrances, where two children could race to see who could reach the end first.
It was one of those moments that tugged at my heartstrings. The laughter of other children filled the air, and Leo expressed a strong desire to participate. However, with his low muscle tone, I questioned whether he could manage an obstacle course. Despite my reservations, I decided to assist him through it. Our aim wasn’t to race; it was merely to reach the finish line together.
Admittedly, it was quite challenging! Nevertheless, Leo was thoroughly enjoying himself, and the soft materials of the course ensured he wouldn’t be hurt. We rolled, crawled, and navigated through inflated pillars and bolsters. Though he fell several times, his laughter echoed through the course.
As we progressed, I began to realize we were taking longer than the other children, and I felt a pang of guilt. However, Leo’s joy was infectious, and I didn’t want to hurry him along. Upon reaching the center of the course, I noticed a sizable crowd that had gathered to watch our journey. My heart sank as I feared they might be frustrated with our slow pace.
To my surprise, they were cheering him on! “You can do it!” “You’re doing amazing!” “Keep pushing forward!” I nearly teared up as I continued to help Leo.
We soon encountered a nearly vertical wall adorned with footholds and a rope. I knew Leo couldn’t climb it on his own, nor could I lift him. Atop the wall awaited the grand finale—a slide. Just then, a kind woman intervened, scaling the wall and reaching out to Leo. With her help, we managed to get him to the top. The slide was the last hurdle, and down we went together!
When Leo landed on the grass, pure elation radiated from him; he had accomplished it. The crowd erupted in cheers, and he beamed with pride as if he had just completed a marathon. It was a heartwarming sight that reaffirmed my love for our community.
Afterward, we treated ourselves to snow cones and enjoyed the parade, completing a delightful day.
