To my fellow mothers,
Just last night, as I settled in for bed, I took a moment to scroll through social media. The news I encountered was heartbreaking. My neighbor’s 5-year-old son, Ethan, who had bravely battled acute myeloid leukemia (AML) for much of last year, had experienced a relapse. The family now faces the daunting prospect of chemotherapy once more and possibly a second bone marrow transplant. My heart ached at the thought.
Ethan is the same vibrant child who was joyfully playing in the yard with my own sons just last week. He is the sweet boy who shares his toys with my younger children, who are still learning the art of sharing. I recall watching him triumphantly learn to ride a bike a few months ago right next to my home. Now, he is set to endure a grueling hospital stay and face the harsh realities of treatment again.
What makes this situation even more harrowing is the understanding that his parents have gained through their journey. They are all too aware of the countless hours they will spend away from their younger son and the fear that will shadow Ethan as he undergoes painful procedures and consumes medications that, while necessary for his recovery, will also make him feel incredibly unwell. Despite this knowledge, they continue to fight with unwavering determination.
In that moment, I felt completely helpless. As a social worker, I have walked alongside countless families in similar circumstances, sharing tears and laughter, but never have I witnessed a friend’s child endure such a battle. I felt a burning desire to help, but the options seemed limited.
We could offer to cut their grass, but they already have a service for that. We could look after their younger son, but they have family nearby who are capable and familiar. I can prepare meals and lend emotional support, yet it still feels inadequate when their child’s life hangs in the balance.
This morning, however, an idea sparked within me. I need your assistance to make a difference. No, I’m not asking for donations to a crowdfunding campaign.
Before my oldest child was born, I registered as a bone marrow donor. The reality of motherhood made me realize that if my family were ever in need, I would want to ensure there was a match available for us. Thus, I entered the donor pool, and although I have yet to be matched, I find comfort in knowing that my DNA is accessible should it ever be needed by a mother, father, or child.
Now, imagine if everyone reading this took the step to register as a donor. Imagine the impact if each of those individuals shared information about bone marrow donation with their community. We could dramatically increase the donor pool and save lives.
Becoming a donor is a straightforward process. Simply visit bethematch.org, request a kit, and follow the enclosed instructions to swab your cheek from the comfort of your home. Then send it back, and just like that, you could potentially save a life. Has anything so transformative ever been this easy?
As mothers, we have the capacity to protect our children, our families, and others like Ethan. If you cannot register yourself due to age or health restrictions, please consider sharing this vital information with others who can.
While we may not have the power to change everything for children like Ethan, we can take meaningful action. Please think about registering as a bone marrow donor. Your decision could change a life forever.
Sincerely,
Jamie Reynolds
