Navigating solo time with my daughter can sometimes be daunting. While she is undoubtedly the cutest little bundle of joy, her limited vocabulary—comprising mainly “yeah,” “bye,” and “hi”—renders her less than ideal as a conversation partner. She also seems to think that I must remain within an arm’s reach at all times, calling out “mama?!” if I stray too far. Despite my affection for her button nose, chubby cheeks, and newly acquired pigtails, there are moments when she can be a bit of a handful, especially during the following activities:
- Enjoying a meal without a tiny creature trying to snag my food.
- Gardening without a mini excavator uprooting my plants.
- Working on a crossword puzzle (yes, I indulge in them) without a little artist defacing my clues.
- Taking a bathroom break without a curious onlooker barging in to join me.
- Doing laundry without a mischievous child grabbing freshly washed clothes and running off with glee.
- Putting away dishes without a pint-sized daredevil handling the wine glasses like a circus performer.
- Choosing jewelry without a little thief pilfering my favorite pieces (goodbye diamond earring that marked my first child’s birth).
- Showering without the lurking suspicion that a budding makeup artist is testing the limits of my expensive wallpaper with red lipstick.
- Organizing Legos without a tiny bulldozer sweeping through my carefully arranged creations.
- Trying to zone out in front of the computer without a little angel reminding me of how distant I can be as a parent.
However, after dropping my son off at school today, my daughter and I spent a blissful morning outdoors—oh, the joy of spring! Parents of toddlers must feel a unique sense of relief as winter’s grip loosens and they can let their little ones roam free again.
After a failed attempt at pruning some pansies (not the best idea with a toddler around—trust me), I redirected my daughter by snatching an uprooted grape hyacinth and leading her to a safer spot. I surrendered to her whims. For the next hour, we simply existed together. I reclined in the grass, basking in the gentle warmth of early spring sunshine, while she nestled into my lap—her possessiveness over my space is charming, as if I’m her personal chair. We observed birds and passing cars, running our fingers through the grass and discovering pinecones, twigs, and stones. Our silence was only interrupted by her curious little sounds and my gentle explanations of the world around us.
In that moment, I reflected on how little quality time I have had with my second child over her 22 months. I wrapped my arm around her soft frame, feeling no regret for not scrolling through online sales or contemplating my wardrobe choices.
