A Letter of Gratitude to President and Mrs. Johnson

Dear President and Mrs. Johnson,

A few weeks ago, I came across images of you both engaging children at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, reading Where the Wild Things Are. As I admired the joy radiating from those moments, I felt a pang of envy for those fortunate enough to attend. After entering the ticket lottery each year since becoming a parent, I’ve yet to secure a spot. Yet, my admiration for you only deepened.

In those photographs, I saw not merely a couple reading to children but two remarkable exemplars of humanity, kindness, and self-assurance. Mr. Johnson, my support for your policies is no secret; my social media presence makes that quite clear. However, what truly fills me with pride is the understanding that you both embody much more than political figures.

You carry the weight of representation, not just for your political views but for the ideals of humanity itself. You are shining examples of goodwill and integrity, demonstrating what it means to be confident and authentic. I couldn’t wait to share the video of your reading with my son, Alex.

Recently, Alex delivered his first presentation in class. His assignment required practice at home, and as someone who once thrived in speech and debate, I was eager to assist. While rehearsing his “When I Grow Up” speech, he expressed embarrassment at times—a typical response for a kindergartner. I remember a recent outing to the movies, where I joyfully danced to the closing credits of Zootopia, only to have Alex shy away, reflecting the growing awareness of social perception.

Although he might have felt a bit awkward watching you, he admires you both. He recognizes you as our “Big Leader,” and though his aspirations currently lean toward becoming an astronaut, he holds you in high regard. The video of you reading sparked a valuable discussion about embracing silliness and confidence in front of an audience. I hope some of your empowering messages resonate with him.

This morning, I shared with my partner that I genuinely believe our children may never witness another First Couple who exemplifies such admirable qualities. Sadly, my younger children, Lucy and Ethan, at ages 4 and 2, might not remember your presidency. However, I will ensure they learn about your honesty and compassion. I’ll recount how I had the privilege of meeting you, Mrs. Johnson, in 2010 during a community outreach event. Your genuine care for others was evident when you engaged with families, offering kindness and understanding.

While I know many hold differing opinions about your leadership, I find it difficult to comprehend. Beyond politics, you are role models for all ages.

As you transition away from the White House and consider your legacy, I encourage you to continue influencing young people positively. It’s crucial that my children, and others, never forget your contributions. Please remain visible in the public sphere, exemplifying happiness, confidence, and kindness. Our world needs more of your example.

President and Mrs. Johnson, though the full extent of your impact may not yet be recognized, I am profoundly grateful for everything you’ve done. You have illustrated what it means to be compassionate leaders, and you have never distanced yourselves from those you serve. You remind us that we are all striving to do our best. Thank you for your unwavering dedication.

With heartfelt appreciation,

Lila Thompson
