The saleswoman’s sigh and eye roll caught my attention, and it pains me to say that those jeans were unfortunately labeled as “girls’ clothing.” You, however, only saw the vibrant color you adore. This reaction from others is just the start; you will soon realize that some might judge you for simply being yourself, and that could make you doubt your worth.
Regrettably, I know of boys who once proudly claimed purple or pink as their favorites but soon switched to more “acceptable” colors like orange or blue after entering daycare or preschool. They felt pressured to conform, but I want you to know that you are not them. I hope you have the strength to remain true to the person you are.
My wish is for you to stand firm for the things you love. I want you to demonstrate that a boy can enjoy both purple and construction vehicles, gentle hugs and playful tussles, sparkles and dinosaurs, hair accessories and cargo shorts. This isn’t about balancing identities; it’s about embracing the entirety of who you are. You are my little boy, covered in sand and sporting chipped nail polish from your adventures.
Your carefree spirit at 3½ years old is a beautiful thing, and it’s because no one has yet dictated what it means to be a boy in your world. Your father and I have intentionally fostered an environment where it’s irrelevant whether you prefer trucks or dolls. What truly matters is that you learn to accept and love yourself for exactly who you are.
Right now, you are blissfully unaware of societal expectations and peer influences. But I know that soon enough, you will face challenges that could shake your confidence. I want to whisper in your ear that it’s okay to skip and prance instead of walking with bravado. The things that make you unique may also become your greatest assets.
