As a father of three, I’ve made my fair share of blunders during my partner’s pregnancies. Reflecting on those experiences, I hope to share some insights with future dads who might find themselves in similar situations.
-
“I can’t see why you’re feeling so drained.”
Seriously, Jamie? Of course, you can’t grasp it. Your partner is nurturing a new life within her! What have you contributed? Just some poor choices and, well, a bit of confusion. It’s crucial to acknowledge that the process of creating a human is incredibly exhausting. If your partner expresses fatigue, simply affirm her feelings. It’s a monumental task.
-
“Every time I see your baby bump, it makes me a bit anxious.”
It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of parenthood, but remember that your partner is likely grappling with similar fears. On top of that, she’s facing hormonal shifts and the physical challenges of pregnancy. This isn’t the time for you to seek emotional support from her. Instead, focus on providing encouragement and excitement. Embrace the journey of parenthood rather than dwelling on future responsibilities.
-
“Why are you crying again?”
Instead of appearing annoyed, recognize that your partner is experiencing a whirlwind of emotions. You still have control over your feelings, unlike her, who is navigating unexpected sorrow and cravings. Don’t assume her tears are unwarranted. Instead, offer her a hug, ask how you can support her, or just let her have a moment to herself. It’s quite simple.

“It’s 9:30 p.m. I don’t want to go to Taco Bell.”
Remember that last time you had a late-night craving? You dashed out for that taco without hesitation. Now that your partner has a craving, it’s not the time to be lazy. Instead, be the supportive partner she needs and fetch her that burrito without complaint.
-
“You’re so hormonal! It’s driving me nuts.”
Congratulations on stating the obvious! Yes, pregnancy can bring a rollercoaster of emotions. You were aware of this before, so don’t act surprised. Just because she might have an emotional outburst doesn’t mean you should dismiss her feelings. The reality is that the only issue she’s facing right now is the temporary changes caused by carrying your child. Approach her with empathy rather than frustration.
