The arrival of a child can dramatically transform your life—often in unexpected and sometimes frustrating ways. I began documenting my experiences with parenthood as a means to express the challenges posed by my toddler, while also demonstrating that parenthood doesn’t have to erase every aspect of your prior life. Yes, having kids alters everything—capital-E Everything—but little-e everything can remain intact.
My partner and I have managed to retain some semblance of our former lives, despite the constant adjustments that parenting demands. However, there are still several challenges we can’t escape. Below are six ways my life has been irrevocably altered since becoming a parent:
- Sleep Deprivation. Unsurprisingly, sleep is a luxury I can no longer afford.
- Dining Dilemmas. I once relished the freedom to eat whatever I desired at any time. After marriage and the addition of a child, that changed. Now, whenever I open the pantry, my toddler immediately identifies something he wants, leading to a meltdown if he doesn’t get it. Even during meal times, he insists on having what’s on my plate, despite having the same dish in front of him. Initially, I thought his behavior was nonsensical, but now I realize he’s merely beginning the lifelong process of claiming everything that belongs to me.
- Entertainment Choices. I used to enjoy watching and listening to whatever I pleased. Now, I can’t even go to the movies anymore. At home, I find myself safeguarding my viewing habits, avoiding anything with violence, bad language, or adult themes, while enduring his favorite shows like Yo Gabba Gabba! and Caillou. My DVR has become a tomb for children’s programming.
- Intimacy Restrictions. The freedom to engage in intimacy whenever I desired has also vanished. Now, my partner and I have limited options: early mornings, exhausted evenings, or during nap time—if we’re lucky enough not to be interrupted. While I can often push through, my partner’s interest tends to diminish under the circumstances.
- Alcohol Limitations. Thankfully, my toddler isn’t yet at the age where my drinking habits spark uncomfortable inquiries, but my social drinking has significantly diminished. I find it increasingly difficult to enjoy a night out or to indulge in day drinking, as I must remain sober enough to care for him afterward. Trust me, a toddler should not be subjected to the aftermath of my sun-soaked drinking escapades.
- Loss of Recklessness. I used to engage in reckless behavior without a second thought—jaywalking, speeding, and even forgoing flu shots. Those carefree days have vanished since becoming a parent. However, I still manage to embrace a fair amount of idiocy, and I must admit, I’ve never felt happier.
Despite the challenges, the positives of parenthood far outweigh the negatives. Yet some days, the scales feel dangerously balanced.
