At first glance, I fit the mold of a typical stay-at-home mom (SAHM). I am dedicated to raising my two young sons, ages 4 and 1, while managing the household chores and responsibilities that come with adulthood. I enjoy baking delightful treats, such as cupcakes.
I cherish my role within the family and love spending quality time with my children while ensuring our home is clean and secure. Surprisingly, I even find joy in grocery shopping. However, I also identify as a feminist and am acutely aware of the silent message my sons receive when they see their father heading off to work while I take care of household tasks. I willingly embraced this SAHM lifestyle, but it’s essential for me that they grasp the significance of this choice.
So, how can I instill in my sons the values of gender equality and challenge stereotypes when they observe their mother in the home and their father in the office?
1. Involve the Boys in Daily Tasks
My days are filled with chores, errands, and repetitive tasks. Fortunately, my kids can help with many of these activities. I believe in assigning them responsibilities around the house. As I fold laundry, wash dishes, or dust shelves, I invite my oldest son to assist me. While he sometimes resists or may slow me down, I persist in encouraging his participation. I also ensure that they help their father with tasks he typically handles, such as cooking and vacuuming.
2. Mind My Language
Whenever I think about asking my husband to “watch the kids while I step out” or find myself grumbling about chores, I remind myself that my son is always observing and listening. Given that I spend so much time with him, it’s easy to overlook the weight of my words. Therefore, I strive to communicate with my husband as the primary caregiver he is and avoid framing housework and parenting as burdens that I, as a woman, must shoulder alone.
3. Introduce Feminism Early
Coming from an educational background as a former elementary school teacher, I appreciate the value of direct discussions on complex subjects. While teaching social-emotional skills can be challenging, it’s rewarding to witness their impact. I engage my children in thoughtful conversations about inequality, stereotypes, oppression, and feminist role models, ensuring that these discussions are age-appropriate. My goal is to equip them with the ability to question societal norms rather than accept them blindly.
4. Utilize Storytelling
Storytelling is an effective educational tool, so I weave important lessons into the narratives I share with my children. I create stories featuring a diverse array of characters, such as stay-at-home dads, female construction workers, and princesses who save the day. This creative approach allows for expansive character development and adventures that challenge traditional gender roles.
5. Challenge Generalizations
My oldest son likes to make sweeping statements about the world, such as “Mommy looks like this, so all girls look like this.” When he makes these generalizations, I seize the opportunity to counter them with examples that broaden his perspective. For instance, when he asks whether only dads can do programming, I respond with “no,” and provide specific instances of women in tech roles, just like his father.
6. Embrace Community Support
I recognize the importance of involving other adults and even older peers in ongoing discussions about gender equality and stereotypes. Engaging family and friends not only benefits the children but also enriches the adults’ understanding of these topics.
While there are no certainties in parenting, I strive to raise my sons to appreciate that roles and responsibilities should not be determined by gender. In summary, as a SAHM, I am dedicated to raising my sons with a strong foundation in gender equality. By involving them in daily tasks, mindful communication, direct education about feminism, creative storytelling, challenging generalizations, and leveraging community support, I aim to foster a mindset that promotes equality and respect for all.
