To My Child: I Understand You, Even When Others Might Not

Dear Little One,

I need to confess something. Every morning when you leave for school, there’s a weight in my heart. I’ve done everything in my power to prepare you for the world, yet I still find myself filled with worry. Life can be challenging, and I know that children can be harsh—adults can be even tougher. I see you facing struggles, feeling that sometimes no one really understands you.

But let me tell you something, my dear: I understand you.

As strange as it may sound, I sometimes wish I could turn back time and have you as a baby for just a single day. It’s not because you aren’t the incredible person I hoped you’d become—you’re even more wonderful than I imagined. It’s simply that back then, I could shield you from the harshness of the world. I didn’t have to worry about anyone hurting you or dimming your spirit. I could hold you close, soothe your fears, and make you giggle with silly toys.

If I could cradle you as a baby again, I would cherish every moment. I would hold you tight, enjoying the feeling of keeping you safe. I wouldn’t mind if you cried, because I would be there to comfort you. I’d rock you to sleep and watch your peaceful face filled with dreams. You would seek only my love and your dad’s, and I would fulfill your every need.

Reflecting on this, I realize it sounds a bit selfish. Protecting you would ease my own worries, and while that’s a normal feeling for a mother, it wouldn’t serve you well in the long run. I understand that I must let you venture out into life. You need to navigate the complexities of school, face the anxiety of social situations, and grow into your own person. You must encounter challenges, rejection, and sadness, for without these experiences, the joyful moments wouldn’t hold the same meaning.

You might not share the same interests as your peers, and your unique style may not always be appreciated. Regardless, you are a remarkable individual, strong and inspiring. You have the potential to embrace the world and make your mark. Don’t conform to fit in; just remember you’re never alone. If things ever feel overwhelming, reach out to me, and I will be there.

I’ll be honest, I’ll likely always carry a sense of worry, knowing I can’t keep a safety net around you. I can’t wrap you in bubble wrap to prevent every fall. But on those tough days, remember there is always a soft place to land. I’m here for you, no matter what happens. Whether you’re a teenager who thinks I’m unbearable or an adult living the life you choose, my support will never waver. Just be yourself; you were never meant to be anyone else.

I understand you, and I’m immensely grateful for you.

With all my love,

Mom
