While going through some old scrapbooks today, I stumbled upon a folded note that took me back in time. It was an extensive 6-page document outlining ‘guidelines and explanations’—a term I coined—crafted for my in-laws when they graciously offered to babysit our daughter. This gesture allowed me to embark on an unforgettable 10-day adventure in Italy with my mother.
This occurred eight years ago when my daughter was just turning one and we had recently relocated into a new home—a week filled with unpacked boxes and the delightful chaos of parenting a toddler. Despite the whirlwind, my in-laws flew in from Arizona to take care of her, making it possible for us to enjoy a culinary journey through Italy. I remain deeply appreciative of their willingness to help, and even more so, I now laugh at the idea that they didn’t run for the hills or chuckle at my lengthy list upon receiving it.
To ensure they were well-prepared, I compiled what I believed to be an informative and necessary guide detailing all the essential information they would need to help them navigate the next 10 days. Reflecting on it now, eight years later and with a second child in tow, I can’t help but find humor in how my list must have appeared to two accomplished and loving grandparents who had successfully raised their own two sons.
Here is the core of that note, and I can only imagine the thoughts racing through their minds while reading it. I share this with all the mothers out there, especially those preparing to draft their own ‘guidelines’ for their first time away from their little ones. And for those like me, who have older children but still remember the anxiety of handing off their precious babies for the first time. Keep those notes; you’ll cherish them one day as a reminder of how far you’ve come—and perhaps prompt you to elevate your gift for their next holiday season.
