Today marked a significant transformation for my child; he has transitioned from a baby into a little boy. This change has been gradual, though I hadn’t fully recognized it until now. His movements have evolved, as have his posture, facial expressions, and the way he walks. It’s as if I witnessed this evolution in slow motion, even while being present for each moment. This paradox is familiar to all parents, isn’t it?

Earlier today, I nursed my child before his nap, and upon finishing—perhaps for the last time—I could see the shift. As he slept in my arms, it was clear to me: the baby I once knew has transformed into a little boy. His hair, tousled and boyish, long limbs replacing the chubby form I had grown accustomed to. There was no mistaking it.

I found myself holding him longer than usual, embracing him as the young boy he has become. His head rested heavily on my shoulder; his weight felt different—more substantial than before. I savored the moment, knowing that by holding him close, I could momentarily halt the relentless march of time. Each second spent in this stillness felt like a pause, a chance to cling to this fleeting chapter of his life. Yet, I knew that eventually, I would have to set him down, and with that, the possibility of freezing time would vanish. He would continue to grow, inevitably moving toward adulthood.

Everyone advises to cherish these early years; they often say, “They grow so fast.” That statement feels both profoundly true and completely misleading. In the daily grind, time can seem to stretch endlessly—dinnertime can feel like an eternity, and sleepless nights can last a lifetime. But still, the refrain echoes: they grow so fast.

Therefore, I want to hold him in my arms a little longer today because my baby is already gone. In his place stands a little boy, and before I know it, there will be an older boy, then a teenager, and eventually a young man. So I continue to cradle him: the weight of his body is significant on my shoulder, in his nursery where time appears frozen.
