This is an important announcement: Your bewildered expression is not a pleasant one.
I invite you to try something. Stand before a mirror. Close your eyes and recall a moment when you felt utterly perplexed, caught off guard, or simply confused. Embrace that feeling. Now, open your eyes and see the reflection of the face you made. Not very appealing, is it? In fact, it’s rather uninviting.
How do I know this? It’s not because I’m eavesdropping on your thoughts through your reflection. Rather, it’s because that same bewildered expression is what I frequently encounter in public spaces—an expression that conveys confusion and, at times, hostility. My mission is to raise awareness among those who stare at my child (and many others) that your bewildered face is not a kind one, and perhaps in doing so, we can make the world a little more compassionate.
Imagine navigating life and encountering that confused expression every time you make eye contact with someone. Disturbing, isn’t it?
Then, as if that isn’t enough, the person who has been staring realizes their faux pas and attempts a recovery expression, which typically looks something like this: not much better. In fact, it may be worse.
After experiencing this reaction countless times, I feel compelled to interpret it for you. It seems like you might be silently exclaiming: “I cannot fathom what my eyes are witnessing. A person who looks or behaves differently? What is this? Where am I? Is this safe? This is so far from my understanding that my face has frozen in confusion and fear.”
First and foremost, what year are we in? “Diversity” has been a common term for several decades, and I’m quite certain that wheelchairs have been around longer than that. If these concepts are new to you, perhaps it’s time to broaden your horizons.
Secondly, think of the children… though to be honest, in our case, my child is blissfully unaware of these stares. This is more for my sake. For the sake of myself, parents like me, and the children and adults who do notice these reactions and are weary of them, please work on your facial expressions. Want to make a difference? Strive to cultivate kindness in your expressions.
It may seem challenging, but fear not! I’m here to help. Thanks to my years of dedication to a certain educational television show on modeling, I know it is feasible (with effort) to master your facial expressions, even when your thoughts are different inside. So, let’s practice together!
Next time you encounter something that confuses you, remember:

Go ahead, give it a shot! It’s a challenge, but I believe you can do it.

When you see something unexpected, remember:
Not this:
Or this:
But this:
Got it? Fantastic! I knew you could do it! Now, just practice this exercise for a few hours each day in front of a mirror, and I assure you, you’ll be contributing to a kinder world for families like ours.
This concludes our public service announcement.
