Hello, everyone! I’m thrilled to announce a holiday I’ve created just for moms, and I would love for you to join me in celebrating it. Let me share a little poem, titled “The Ultimate Day of Relaxation,” to explain this special day:

You’ve cooked and you’ve cleaned,
You’ve planned and you’ve dreamed,
To make the holidays bright.
Now you’re wiped out,
Buried in doubt,
In tasks that once felt just right.

You need a break,
Maybe a cake,
And some cheesy TV for fun.
Let the family feast on leftovers,
While you enjoy chocolate-covered treats aplenty,
Diving into relaxation by the ton.

“No cooking today!”
“No, you can’t play!”
“The car stays parked today, it’s true.”
Stay in your pjs,
With hair that’s a mess,
And simply enjoy your time, too.

It’s December 26,
Time for your bliss,
To be the Queen of the Couch.
The remote is your prize,
As wine fills your glass—
You've earned your well-deserved slouch.

Moms’ Day Off happens every December 26! Are you ready for it? I’ve been attempting to celebrate this day for about seven years now, although some years the circumstances have been beyond my control. I initially created this holiday after realizing that from December 22 to December 25, I barely sat down. By the 26th, I was completely exhausted.

My first attempt at Moms’ Day Off was when I had a toddler and a school-aged child. It took me four and a half hours to finish watching a movie, but that day remains one of my favorites. Now, every time I see that movie, I instinctively reach for the wine.

Admittedly, my kids are not fond of this day. It probably doesn’t help that I remind them of it all day long. “Want to watch something? Oops! Sorry, it’s Moms’ Day Off!” I can’t help but chuckle at the thought.

Interested in joining the fun? Here are the guidelines:

  1. The mom holds absolute control over the remote from morning until night, possibly even beyond, as dozing off on the couch is totally allowed.
  2. The car doesn’t leave the driveway.
  3. Wine can be enjoyed starting at 11:30 a.m. (or perhaps even 11).
  4. No new meals will be prepared; the options are leftovers or anything easily accessible.
  5. Dress code: pajamas only. (Last year, I wore my PJs and slippers to a family event I couldn’t miss.)
  6. Nap time is mandatory. Naps everywhere!
  7. No complaints from anyone who isn’t Mom. (Though this rule often gets ignored.)

As for dads: can they participate?

While I generally prefer inclusivity, I hesitate to give a full endorsement. Dads, if you’ve contributed significantly to holiday preparations—great! If not, it’s best to keep the couch warm on Moms’ Day Off, or you might find yourself on the receiving end of some serious side-eye from your partner.

Happy Holidays, and I hope you enjoy this new tradition! For more helpful tips on family and parenting, check out resources like Healthline, which provides insightful information on pregnancy and home insemination, or explore our other post on the At-Home Insemination Kit for more ideas.

In summary, December 26 is the perfect day to unwind and relax, so take advantage of this opportunity to embrace your well-deserved break!
