I became enamored with my partner because he exuded a rugged charm, reminiscent of an adventurous lumberjack. His laid-back demeanor, often accentuated by a cigarette while playing pool, suggested he lived life fully and joyfully. In stark contrast, I carried the appearance of someone who cared deeply about societal expectations.

Initially, I wrestled with my attraction: “This is all wrong. He doesn’t conform. He smokes and drinks, plus he’s not into church.” Yet, Robbie had an irreverence I admired, often expressing every wild thought I held back. He was a stark departure from my previous relationships with rule-abiding individuals, none of whom ever sparked my interest as much as he did.

As our relationship unfolded, I discovered that I not only appreciated his humor but also developed a fondness for beer, perhaps even more than he did. Our unique dynamic, while perplexing to others, felt perfectly suited to us.

Fast forward ten years and three children later, I find myself reflecting on how I once took my youthful physique for granted. I wish I could stand before the mirror, give myself a playful pat, and exclaim, “You go, girl!” Why can’t I fully embrace my body, complete with all its imperfections?

There are moments when I envy the self-assurance often found in men. I yearn for the ability to wear whatever I please without hesitation or regret. Perhaps this is why some older women choose outfits that echo their youthful days; they’ve recognized the importance of embracing their bodies before time slips away. They stand before racks of clothes in stores, thinking, “Why not indulge today? I may never look better than I do now!” And thus, a new chapter begins.

Recently, emboldened by a few glasses of wine, I boldly stepped into my living room, unadorned and unapologetic, proclaiming to Robbie, “Take a good look, this is as good as it gets!” As I twirled, his gaze was fixed on me, and I felt an exhilarating rush. This simple act became a daily ritual, transforming my perspective on self-image.

This is not an act of seduction. I turn on every light, exposing every flaw, creating an atmosphere devoid of soft lighting or hidden angles. It’s as raw as a documentary, yet somehow, my openness lights up Robbie’s day. If I forget this little ritual, he affectionately nudges me to remember, often in a charming manner: “Wait! Don’t forget to show me what I love.”

Through this journey, I’ve learned that the essence of confidence lies in the absence of self-deprecation. For better or worse, my body is what it is, and I’m ready to embrace it—flaws and all. Now let’s enjoy intimacy, bright lights and all.
