“I’m your Venus, I’m your fire. At your desire…”
I was belting out “Venus” by Bananarama in the car (don’t judge—everyone does it, right?) when my daughter chimed in from the backseat.
“Mommy, why are you singing about… um… private parts?”
I abruptly halted my performance.
“‘I’m your penis, I’m your fire. At your desire,’ is that really what you think the song means, Mom? Because that seems really inappropriate.”
Ah, children: they turn our worlds upside down, shaking everything we thought we knew with their tiny, sticky hands. Sometimes it feels like they might drive us to the brink—or at least to a very awkward conversation—only to redeem themselves with something utterly unexpected.
The Whirlwind of Motherhood
Motherhood is a whirlwind of surprises. I often tell my friends who are new to the parenting journey to toss out every pregnancy book they’ve read. Seriously, burn them. They have no real value once the baby arrives. The truth is, there’s no way to anticipate the chaos that children bring, as they are full of delightful surprises.
Preparation is impossible.
When I first became a parent, I was handed a baby, and it took a moment for the reality to sink in. I looked down at this tiny being who shared my genes yet was entirely different from me. It struck me that all my pre-birth knowledge was suddenly irrelevant, as I was too exhausted to recall any of it. So, I let it all go and started fresh.
That pretty much sums up parenthood.
The Expert in the Room
Parenting is so intricate that experts have been trying to guide us for decades, yet no one truly has it figured out—not even the so-called experts. They flip-flop on topics like co-sleeping and breastfeeding, and there’s a study for just about everything you can imagine.
Just let it go.
Our primary responsibilities as parents are to love our children, meet their basic needs, and trust our instincts. These responsibilities will look different for every family because we all have unique circumstances. Trying to fit your parenting style into a pre-defined mold suggested by someone else is a recipe for disappointment. It can be challenging to set aside personal expectations and remain flexible enough to appreciate your child’s individuality. But motherhood is just as much about growing yourself as it is about nurturing your children.
There comes a moment when you realize that you, too, are the expert.
After explaining to my daughter that the song was about Venus, the goddess of love, and not about private parts, I felt grateful for having a child who surprises me daily from the backseat. This topic was never covered in any of my parenting books.
“I don’t want my penis to catch fire!” she exclaimed.
“That would be terrible!” I shouted back, laughing.
There’s no manual for moments like these, and that’s perfectly fine. The real joy of parenting lies in the uncertainty of what lies ahead.
