Mom Musings Before Sleep

As a natural planner and overthinker, I often find myself resisting the urge to prepare for the next day as evening falls. After a long day, my brain craves a break, and I just want to unwind and let my thoughts drift away. Instead, I often find myself bombarded with a multitude of reflections as I settle into bed, trying to find some peace before sleep takes over:

  • What’s on the agenda for tomorrow?
  • What time should I set my alarm to allow for a few snooze hits?
  • Oh no, I forgot to remind him about that last worksheet in his homework packet. Maybe he can squeeze it in before the bus arrives (chuckles at the thought of morning homework).
  • Do we need to return any library books? Are there repairs pending?
  • What should I pack in their lunches for the morning?
  • Tomorrow’s spirit color day. I hope his school shirt isn’t buried in the laundry basket. I’ll just pop it in the dryer for a quick fix when I get up.
  • Two nights from now, we have that event. I still need a babysitter. How crucial is it, really?
  • I have to bring a dish for the gathering this weekend. Do I have enough ingredients in the fridge, or will I need to make an extra trip to the store?
  • Did I stay up too late again? I really hope the little one doesn’t wake up at 4 a.m. looking to snuggle. I need my sleep!
  • I wonder if that person will ever respond to my email.
  • How much should we contribute to the PTO? I appreciate that the school gives us this choice instead of dealing with endless fundraisers.
  • The living room looks like a tornado hit it.
  • I hope I’m not too late to secure that venue for his birthday party. He’s so excited about it.
  • Oh gosh, is he going to grow up writing about how disappointing his 8th birthday was?
  • The boys had such a sweet playtime tonight. I’ll cherish the memory of them scattered across the floor with toys and snacks.
  • Did I return that soup bowl to the lady at church? What did I do with it? I must still have it. She was so kind to bring us soup and that awesome BBQ with cobblers.
  • The apples in the fridge are starting to go bad. I should whip up an apple crisp.
  • I should do something thoughtful for someone tomorrow. I have a little box in the laundry room that could be turned into a care package.
  • Did I remember to cancel that Amazon subscription for dishwasher tabs? We’re swimming in them. I made the same mistake with diapers once.
  • We need to take that pedal car from the garage to the dump because the kids never use it. What else can I declutter?
  • I hope my family in Kansas is doing well, along with our sponsored child, Ravi. I hope he has what he needs and is going to sleep soundly. Is he sleeping in a proper bed?
  • Thank you for our many blessings and this wonderfully chaotic life. Please watch over our family in Oklahoma as storms are on the horizon. And can you also…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
