7 Things Only Kids Can Get Away With Saying

Kids have a unique way of expressing themselves, often saying things that would leave adults in hot water. If I talked to my partner, my colleagues, or friends the way my daughter chats with me, I’d likely find myself single, jobless, and enjoying a solitary drink. Which, honestly, might not be the worst thing on a tough day.

Children, especially in their formative years, seem to have an uncanny ability to push boundaries. While parents are still learning the ropes, managing a little whirlwind with a voice can be quite a challenge. My daughter is nearing 5, and let’s just say she’s a bit of a loose cannon. She can be rude, crude, and frankly, hilarious. There’s a certain awareness she has that lets her know some of what she says is inappropriate, yet she says it anyway.

Part of this stems from innocent curiosity, while another part is classic boundary testing. But there’s also a hefty dose of “I don’t care!” that’s impressive enough to make anyone take notice. Here are a few of the things my daughter has been known to say that only kids can get away with:

  1. “This dinner is gross! I want something else!”
If I made such a declaration to my partner after she spent hours preparing a meal, I’d find myself wearing that food and likely spending the night at a friend’s place, awaiting a stern talking-to.
  2. “SHHH! I can’t hear my show!”
If I were to say this to an adult, they would be thoroughly confused about why I’m watching a kids’ program, and I might just get a punch in the arm for being so rude. When my daughter shouts it, we simply turn the volume down.
  3. “My butt is itchy!”
I really hope I don’t have to respond to that as an adult. If anyone else uttered this, people would back away slowly.
  4. “*Unintelligible screaming*”
If any of us threw tantrums like our kids do, we’d probably be sent to a padded room. I sometimes wish for that kind of escape.
  5. “Can someone wipe me?”
Ah, the glamorous side of parenting!
  6. “That’s mine! You can’t play with it!”
We’ve all felt that frustration, especially when someone swipes our favorite snack. But adults have to keep that in check while kids get a free pass to be a little selfish.
  7. “I don’t like you.”
We might think it about our bosses or even our spouses, but saying it outright? That’s a bold move. My daughter says this to me whenever I deny her something, and she doesn’t even say it with malice—it’s just her truth at that moment.

Thank goodness that beer can’t respond back.
