After an exciting day at the beach, you might find yourself stuck in the hotel room due to rain or simply too tired to explore further. But fear not! Your vacation can still be a blast. One of my favorite ways to unwind on vacation is by playing card games in the comfort of my hotel room. Card games are the ideal choice for traveling because:
- they let you relax and give your feet a break;
- you don’t have to worry about losing pieces that might not show up until you’re back home;
- they spark a delightful competitive spirit amongst family and friends!
On your next adventure, make sure to pack these games, and you’ll have the perfect solution for those dreaded “What should we do now?” or “I’m bored!” moments. Plus, they hardly take up any space in your luggage, leaving more room for souvenirs!
Five Crowns
This is my ultimate favorite card game. The objective is to have the lowest score after 11 rounds. Each player starts with three cards and can “go out” when they achieve either three of a kind or three consecutive numbers in the same suit. In the first round, threes are wild. The next round requires a set of four, and now fours are wild. This pattern continues until you reach the kings round (13 cards). Once someone goes out, tally up the cards left in your hand that aren’t part of a set. Be careful, though—a single high-scoring hand could switch your position from first to last!
Scrabble Slam
I adore the fast-paced nature of this game. Begin by placing the letters of any four-letter word on the table. Players take turns slamming down a card on any letter to create a new word. For instance, turning “wine” into “fine.” The first player to use all their cards wins. It’s simple, quick, and tons of fun!
Rat-a-Tat Cat
In this game, each player lays down four cards face up and peeks at two of them. The aim is to finish with the lowest score (high cards feature rats, while low cards depict cats). On your turn, draw a card and decide whether to swap it with one of your cards or return it. Some cards allow you to peek at your remaining cards, while others let you swap with an opponent. When you think you have the lowest possible cards, shout “Rat-a-Tat Cat!” Everyone then calculates their scores. It’s a delightful mix of luck, strategy, and laughter.
Uno
A classic game that never gets old! Suitable for both young and older kids, simply match colors or numbers, but watch out for those pesky cards that force you to draw two or skip turns. The first to discard all their cards wins, but don’t forget to yell “Uno!” when you have just one card left!
Regular Deck of Cards
The possibilities are endless! Play Go Fish, Rummy, Crazy Eights, or War. And let’s not forget the all-time kid favorite—52-pickup!
While it’s important to let kids entertain themselves during your vacation, it’s comforting to know you have these games ready in your back pocket. Family trips can be pricey, but having a strategy to keep everyone happy is priceless.
