In just a few weeks, you’ll be busy packing suitcases, organizing backpacks, and reviewing new student rosters as you prepare to step into the realm of higher education. Witnessing the excitement and anticipation on your face as you grow into the remarkable individual you are fills my heart with an indescribable joy.
I know you might be tired of hearing advice from someone who’s been sharing it your entire life—whether you asked for it or not. Yet, there’s something crucial I wish to convey, perhaps more through my actions than my words, and it’s essential that you truly understand it.
As you venture out into the world, eager to absorb knowledge and seek new experiences, remember that not every lesson will be a pleasant one. That’s perfectly alright. I genuinely believe that the world is filled with beauty and goodness, yet there are places, situations, and individuals that may not reflect this.
It’s vital to never become too preoccupied to notice the beauty surrounding you. Take the time to seek it out and celebrate it. However, when you encounter those who have had their joy stripped away or who have never learned to appreciate it, don’t shy away. Instead, extend your kindness and share your happiness with them.
When you meet new people, always look them in the eye, and refrain from judging based on appearances. The true essence of a person reveals itself over time and should be measured more by their actions than by their looks or words alone.
I hope you consistently find more compassion and kindness in the world than otherwise. But if you do face the darker sides of life, don’t turn away. Ignoring the shadows is how apathy takes root.
I have endeavored to instill in you the strength to know yourself and to remain true to that identity. As you leave the familiar comforts of home, you may encounter individuals who lack the strength to stand on their own. Life’s circumstances may have left them depleted. Don’t flinch in the face of their need. These are precisely the individuals who could benefit from your resilience. Stand firm in your beliefs even if it means standing alone; that path may not always be easy or popular, but it is the right one.
I hope you never come face to face with true malevolence, as it does exist. I’m not referring to the villains of horror stories, but rather to the senseless pain, both emotional and physical, that humans can inflict upon one another. If you ever find yourself in such darkness, don’t hesitate.
Turning a blind eye to the dimmest places is how true darkness creeps in, slowly erasing the line between what is acceptable and what is not. Evil, regardless of how bright your surroundings may seem, is never justified.
You have always been surrounded by a loving family and friends. The understanding that the struggles of one affect the whole circle is something you’ve grasped well. There’s a broader perspective I hope you never shy away from: every individual is part of that circle. When tragedy strikes one, it sends ripples that touch us all. In an ideal world, there shouldn’t be an “us” or “them,” only a collective “we.”
Do remember that it’s not all negative; we also share in joy and happiness. I hope you never turn away from those moments either.
Feeling overwhelmed is totally normal, and I won’t sugarcoat it—it can be tough. The greatest challenge lies in learning how to keep your heart and mind open without losing your essence. Sometimes it can be painful, particularly when your desire to help feels futile.
My best advice is this: strive to contribute more goodness to the world than you take from it. Just as surely as the sun rises, the ripples of your positive actions will touch others’ lives too.
Understand that success isn’t guaranteed, but neither is failure. Each person sets their own goals and decides how to pursue them, so don’t let anyone else’s definitions limit or inflate your aspirations.
Lastly, embrace the essence of life. When you encounter opportunities for love, laughter, and happiness, seize them wholeheartedly and never look back.
