You might have come across an article on Elite Daily that showcases Instagram photos suggesting that “Millennials are redefining motherhood,” portraying them as the ultimate cool moms. And sure, the women in those images seem to be doing a fantastic job. However, a closer look indicates that this trendy generation is primarily characterized by baby name tattoos, homemade organic baby food, coordinating outfits with their “mini-me,” and attending music festivals with toddlers in tow. While that’s all well and good, let’s not forget that plenty of Gen X moms are also navigating motherhood with flair. Plus, I find it hard to believe that most Gen Y moms can genuinely identify with the curated, bohemian image that often gets assigned to them.
That’s why a group of everyday moms banded together to show that, even without the latest Etsy hair accessories or perfectly executed Pinterest projects, we are all thriving in our unique ways—Home Insemination Kit style.
Every mom knows that early childhood education is crucial; that’s why we teach our kids the art of stealthily snagging snacks from others before they even set foot in preschool. We understand that organic, non-GMO food is ideal—if only reality didn’t sometimes dictate that we serve Dunkin’ Donuts in the car. And let’s be honest, the best way for kids to absorb those so-called “nutrients” is often through their faces—assuming we remembered to buy food in the first place.

Now, don’t get me wrong; we do care about style! It just tends to rank lower on our priority list, right next to personal grooming. We may not have the time for elaborate crafting sessions, but we do spend a significant amount of time cleaning up the “craft projects” our little ones start, which is its own special kind of fun.
Being the “fun mom” for us often means cheering our kids on while they tackle a rock wall in cowboy boots and athletic shorts from the playground bench rather than joining them in the action. We’re tech-savvy too, sharing milestones like the classic “first day of school” pic on social media—unless we forget, in which case we improvise.
Oh, improvisation is our middle name! Like convincing our kids they’re headed to “Lord Business Lego Camp” just to get them to clean up the metric tons of Legos strewn about. Did I mention we do A LOT OF IMPROVISATION?
We’re inseparable from our kids, but it’s usually less about bonding with our baby best friend and more about preventing them from burning the house down in five seconds flat. The authorities aren’t too keen on leaving them alone during dance recitals either. And let’s not forget how “helpful” they can be when we’re working from home.
We might not be heading to Coachella, but we definitely involve our kids in activities we love, like swimming and yoga (even if it looks more like a pretzel gone wrong). We take family trips, though half the time, our kids act like they’d rather be anywhere else.
Regular moms also know when to give our kids some space—like when they’re crushed to find there’s only one chicken nugget left—or when they’re in their “teenagerish” moods. And, yes, we have our own tattoos dedicated to our kids. Some refer to them as “stretch marks,” and they are pretty hardcore.
One thing regular moms can agree on: if there’s a “new face” of motherhood, that face is usually covered in kid fingerprints or even an entire child. Because the essence of great motherhood isn’t about trends or coolness—it’s about being your authentic self. (Extra points if your true self gives your kids a reason to roll their eyes.)
Absolutely, motherhood can involve matching swimsuits, ironic t-shirts, and Pinterest-perfect parties, but it’s also so much more than that. It can even be less than that. It encompasses everything, and any mom who recognizes that is truly killing it at motherhood.
