As the time approaches for my eldest child to head off to college, I can already predict the emotional whirlwind that awaits me during her drop-off. My family is likely crafting clever strategies to discreetly extricate me from her dorm room before I can cause any embarrassment. We’ve already shared a series of significant milestones: the last first day of school, the final school dance, college tours, signing acceptance letters, and countless other memories—each met with her eye-roll and the familiar question, “Are you about to cry again?” Apologies, my dear; it seems inevitable.

With high school graduation and college move-in day looming, I realized I needed a game plan. A way to shift my focus from the bittersweet moments we’ve shared to the exciting adventures that lie ahead. So, my beloved daughter, in addition to my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunities a college education will bring, here are my top five reasons to celebrate your transition from high school to college:

  1. The Great Room Excavation
Packing for college will be like embarking on a grand archaeological dig in your room. We’re bound to unearth forgotten mementos: old photographs, sweet notes, childhood trinkets, and stuffed animals—oh my! Even after countless spring cleanings, you’ve miraculously managed to hide away a trove of memories. This is going to be a delightful adventure.
  2. Care Packages Galore
I can’t quite explain my obsession with care packages, but I suspect it’s because I want to make your days a bit brighter from afar. Whether it’s a homemade lunch, some folded laundry, or a little pampering time, I know I can’t do those small things once you’re away. However, surprising you with goodies from home—sent with love—will definitely add a touch of cheer to your college experience.
  3. Kid No. 2 Gets His Moment
For the first four years, you enjoyed being the center of attention as an only child. Now, your younger brother will relish his own time in the spotlight during his high school years. Just a heads-up: he’s a bit skeptical about being the sole focus of our attention for the next four years, thinking you had it way easier!
  4. A Step Closer to an Empty Nest
Your dad and I were eager to start a family early, which meant putting our couple time—like traveling and spontaneous nights out—on hold. We were hopeful that once we raised our children, we’d have time to reconnect. While we’re not rushing into empty nest life yet, we’ll be ready to explore new adventures together as your brother prepares to leave for college. Remember, after 22 years of marriage, your parents still enjoy each other’s company; that’s a good sign!
  5. It’s Your Time to Soar
Now is your moment to spread your wings, and you are fully prepared. Embracing independence can be thrilling yet daunting, but it’s a vital part of life’s journey. Just know that if you ever need a place to land and catch your breath, we’ll always be here for you.

In summary, while the thought of my firstborn heading off to college brings a mix of emotions, I choose to celebrate the journey ahead. From the nostalgic excavation of your room to the joy of sending care packages, this transition marks a beautiful new chapter for both of us.
