While it may seem trivial compared to the grander challenges of parenting, ever since I acquired a smartphone a few years back, my device—and later my laptop—has become cluttered with countless images of my children in various states of play. From silly antics to themed outfits, every moment is documented, resulting in an overwhelming collection of similar snapshots.
The digital photos on my device tend to fall into three categories:
1. The Forced Smile
My kids are utterly exhausted by constant photo requests. Unlike the formal occasions of our own childhoods—birthdays and proms—my children are asked to pose at every turn. With my camera always at hand, I find myself the “bad guy” if I don’t capture their moments. Ever been that one parent at a recital without a phone in hand? The judgment is real.
2. The Action Shots
Somehow, my kids have developed a knack for taking multiple shots of a single action, much like sports photographers. Should I preserve these sequences of somersaults over the couch? Is it worth the digital space they occupy?
3. The Kid Selfies
My children often commandeer my phone, producing hundreds of selfies and random images, including blurry faces and even pictures of the TV screen. When they’re absorbed in a show, they capture it all. We’ve officially entered the realm of meta-media—a screen within a screen within a screen.
Finding time to back up these images, as tech experts suggest, is a challenge. The process of creating printed photo books can be a time-consuming labyrinth. Each photo requires a caption, and then there’s the dilemma of choosing the best shot from nearly identical ones. The endless options can lead to a mountain of unfinished projects in my digital files.
This brings me to my biggest fear: What if a digital catastrophe occurs and I lose all these memories? If a childhood goes unrecorded, did it even happen?
So, what’s the solution for all these pictures? I could delete them, but that takes time, and in a moment of haste, I might erase that one perfect image that encapsulated their 5-year-old selves. Deleting feels almost heartless, yet I must steel myself against attachment. In this age of instant photography, I remind myself: easy come, easy go.
Except for maybe this one…
