For months, we deliberated over the ideal name for our little girl. We adored the name Olivia, but decided against it since it was one of the top three most popular choices, and we wanted something a bit more “unique.” We tossed around Avery and Caroline, but ultimately, we landed on Charlotte, primarily because we didn’t know anyone else who had named their baby Charlotte.
Clearly, I must be living under a rock—I need to expand my social circle! Just a few weeks ago, I attended a Baptism class, and wouldn’t you know it, the woman sitting behind me had a daughter named Charlotte too. When we brought our little one in for her baptism, guess what? Another Charlotte was right next to us. And then the ultimate twist—those Royals had to name their baby Charlotte. Seriously, WHY?!?
If anyone else in the world chose the name Charlotte, I would have enthusiastically applauded their taste. But the Princess of practically the entire globe? It’s enough to make me reconsider our choice. I mean, how is our Charlotte going to stand out among the sea of other “Charlottes” in her class?
I’m seriously contemplating a name change. It seems like a daunting task, but I know the real headache would come from explaining to everyone why we made the switch when she was just six months old. Friends and family would probably think I’ve lost it. Plus, we have a mountain of personalized items with her name on them. Maybe I could send all that monogrammed stuff to Kate and William, and who knows, they might surprise me with a handwritten note and some doughnuts like they did for those folks waiting outside the hospital. Now that would be a bonus!
Of course, I don’t personally know the Royals (though I’m convinced Kate and I would totally hit it off), so it’s not like they are intentionally copying our choice. But still, for at least the next decade, Charlotte is bound to be the most popular name for girls. And let’s face it, that’s a bit of a bummer.
To my darling Charlotte: I’m truly sorry that we didn’t nail it with your name. I have a feeling this won’t be the last time I fall short over the next eighteen years, so you better prepare yourself. For now, my best bet is to come up with a cute nickname for you.
