As a parent, sending my oldest child off to middle school was one of the most intimidating experiences I’ve faced. I know it’s common for kids to navigate sixth grade without any major issues, and I might be overreacting, but the thought of him entering this pivotal stage has lingered in my mind since the day he was born. I’m sure many can relate to the anxiety that comes with memories of middle school chaos—everything from braces and awkward growth spurts to cliques and heartbreak.
Despite my reservations, I’ve been fortunate; my own middle school years weren’t the most traumatic. However, since becoming a parent, my perception of middle school has shifted dramatically. I hear tales of wild behavior and the horrors of navigating a school environment that feels more like a battleground. My son, for instance, came home from his first day and mentioned he now understands the inspiration behind a classic rock song. Yikes!
The silver lining is that his experience has improved significantly since that initial day. Now, as we celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week, I have a few heartfelt messages for his sixth-grade teachers:
I may not know you personally, but I value your impact.
This is the first year my child has had multiple teachers throughout the semester, and with three younger siblings, I haven’t had the chance to engage with the school community. It’s strange to not know the faces behind the names, and I can’t even pick a few of you out of a line-up. This is likely why many middle and high school teachers don’t receive much in the way of individual appreciation during Teacher Appreciation Week; it can be overwhelming to shop for eight different educators, especially when you are not acquainted with them. Nevertheless, I want you to know how grateful I am for the care you provide my son each day in your classroom. His year has surpassed all my expectations, and I know that’s largely due to your dedication.
I have come to appreciate the crucial role you play.
This year, my child was introduced to Shakespeare, crafted a manta ray from felt and pipe cleaners, and even tackled algebra. He delivered speeches, won debates, and constructed a motor. He discovered a passion for volleyball and an affinity for languages. Middle school has transformed the educational landscape for him, pushing him toward more challenging and enriching subjects. I now realize just how significant your role is in this process—the teacher who introduces Shakespeare can truly change a student’s perception of literature and learning. For that, I’m forever grateful.
You have my utmost respect for your work.
As a parent of two tweens, I can’t fathom how you manage to step into the classroom each day, surrounded by their hormonal energy. I recognize that while this age group is full of potential and unique personalities, it can also be quite challenging. Considering the disparity between your vital role and your compensation, you are nothing short of heroes in my eyes. In fact, I often think that if superheroes wore pajamas, they’d sport the faces of middle school teachers.
Today, I contributed a cake to a PTA buffet in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the time to put my name on it or inform you it was from us. Perhaps anonymity is better; I hope it made you feel appreciated by many. Much like other holidays (cough MothersDay cough), it feels like we shouldn’t need a designated week to express gratitude toward teachers, but I’m thankful for the opportunity to pause and say thank you. Your job is undoubtedly demanding, and while people are quick to voice concerns when things go wrong, they often forget to acknowledge the good.
This is my way of speaking up.
In conclusion, as we recognize Teacher Appreciation Week, I hope all educators know how much they are valued, even if they don’t hear it often enough. Your commitment shapes the future of our children, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
