I was a devoted viewer of the series from 2005 to 2011, blissfully unaware of the happenings at Seattle Grace since my last viewing. However, none of that mattered because the latest episode unfolded mostly outside the hospital, highlighting Derek Shepherd’s valiant attempts to rescue four individuals from a devastating car accident—and OMG, one of them was someone from a beloved series! Ultimately, he got struck by a massive truck as he left the scene.
Spoiler alert: he didn’t make it. Even though I had an inkling of what was coming, it still hit hard. Major kudos to the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes. The suspense was palpable throughout the entire hour, reminiscent of the nail-biting tension I felt during that unforgettable moment of Meadow struggling to parallel park in the finale of The Sopranos. The cinematography and pacing left me in tears from the outset and well into the night—and I’m not even a die-hard fan of the show!
Full confession: here I am, 12 hours later, still emotionally drained.
I’m not alone in this experience. Despite Entertainment Weekly accidentally spilling the beans on McDreamy’s fate hours earlier with early copies of an edition featuring an exclusive Patrick Dempsey interview, the Internet erupted with disbelief and outrage. Some passionate fans even went so far as to draw comparisons between Rhimes’ decision and, well, an abusive partner or serial killer—yikes! Clearly, feelings are running high. I’m right there with them, and I don’t even regularly watch the show.
