Nearly a decade ago, I found myself in an emergency room, grappling with an unexpected diagnosis: Type 1 Diabetes. After five days on an insulin drip and learning the ropes of carb counting, insulin injections, and blood sugar monitoring, I emerged with a new lifestyle. While the brochures presented a somewhat glossy view of diabetes management, I quickly learned the realities of living with this condition—such as the potential complications, from kidney issues to vision problems. Yet, despite the challenges, there are some unexpected perks to having Type 1 Diabetes:
- Extra Attention at Airports: Every time I fly, my insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor attract the TSA’s curiosity. I go through the full airport security routine—arms out, legs spread—while my family watches. Sure, I’d prefer Ryan Gosling to be the one patting me down, but at least it makes for an interesting story!
- Restaurant Authority: When dining out, my friends often defer to me for restaurant choices, thinking my dietary restrictions limit options. I relish the moment of contemplation, only to surprise them with an order of loaded nachos and a refreshing mojito.
- Snack Breaks on Demand: Regardless of where we are or how tight the schedule, a loud shout of “COFFEE!” or “SNACK!” gives me the right to a break. Whether it’s a caramel macchiato or a protein bar, my friends and family are obliged to indulge my cravings.
- Medical Praise: As a Type 1 Diabetic, I often find myself in a room full of patients who don’t quite fit my healthy lifestyle. My doctors shower me with compliments for my dedication, and I graciously accept their accolades—with a celebratory treat afterward, of course!
- Snack Rescuer: At playdates or park outings, I’m the go-to mom with a stash of snacks. While other kids whine for food, I pull out apples, cheese sticks, and granola bars from my seemingly bottomless bag. It’s like I’m a superhero in the eyes of other parents.
- Kid Attraction: Children are fascinated by my insulin pump. They gaze in wonder at the lights and buttons, and I enjoy explaining how it all works. Who knew diabetes could make me the coolest adult in the room?
- Shoe Shopping Perks: Foot health is crucial for diabetics, so I invest in high-quality footwear. While my peers might be snagging deals at discount stores, I’m shopping for comfy yet stylish shoes that won’t compromise my well-being—albeit at a higher price.
- Excuse for Absurdities: Did I snap at my partner or forget a crucial date? No problem! I can easily attribute my off days to fluctuating blood sugar levels. It’s the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card!
- Confidence with Imperfections: My insulin pump is a constant companion, so I’ve learned to embrace my appearance, scars, and all. Testing my blood sugar in public has become a normal part of life, and I wear my marks of living boldly.
- Letting Go of Perfection: As a naturally organized person, diabetes has taught me that life can be unpredictable. I’m now learning to adapt and teaching my kids the same lesson. When things don’t go perfectly, we can always enjoy some cheese fries and try again tomorrow.
