5 Ways My Anxiety Makes Me Awesome

I’ve battled anxiety since childhood, often plagued by obsessive thoughts about school, friendships, and the fear of getting into trouble. As a teenager, I developed various phobias, including the fear of flying and being in crowds, worsened by experiencing the aftermath of 9/11 in New York City. After struggling for years, I finally found a therapist who helped me navigate my panic attacks through effective coping strategies.

Despite all the cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, and exercise I’ve tried, anxiety still lurks in the background, ready to surface at any moment. However, one of my greatest realizations as I’ve matured is the acceptance of my anxiety disorder as part of my identity. It runs in my family, and rather than fight it, I’ve come to embrace the unique energy it brings to my life. So, while I don’t enjoy the moments of panic—like when my heart races and I feel trapped—I have also come to appreciate how my anxiety contributes to my personality in positive ways. 1. Imagination Galore

Sure, my imagination can lead me to believe that the bus I’m on is about to explode, but it’s also what fuels my creativity as a writer and poet. It’s the same ability that allows me to whip up a delicious meal from leftover ingredients and turn a mundane shopping trip with my kids into an epic jungle adventure. I genuinely cherish this imaginative side of myself.

2. Drive for Excellence

I tend to be a perfectionist—okay, maybe more than just a bit. While the anxiety of plans going awry can trigger panic attacks, it also drives me to strive for excellence in everything I do. I’m reliable, committed, and honest. Sure, my perfectionism might annoy some, but I take pride in delivering quality work consistently.

3. Deep Emotional Awareness

Growing up, my favorite fairy tale was “The Princess and the Pea” because I resonated with it so much. I experience emotions deeply, not just my own, but also those of others around me. This heightened sensitivity can lead to overstimulation, but it also means I’m an empathetic person. I’m in tune with my feelings and unafraid to express them.

4. Concern for Others

My empathy extends beyond close friends and family; it encompasses strangers I encounter daily. I often find myself losing sleep over social issues and the well-being of others. While excessive worrying isn’t ideal, it highlights my deep-seated desire to contribute positively to the world. I will always strive to make a difference, even if it keeps me up at night.

5. Daily Acts of Courage

Some days, the flood of anxiety makes stepping outside feel like climbing Mount Everest. Yet I push through—I nurture my children, fulfill my work responsibilities, and navigate life even on tough days. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I remind myself that showing up is an act of bravery. I’m managing to live my life despite the challenges of anxiety, and that’s something worth celebrating.

Although I wouldn’t wish anxiety on anyone, including my worst enemy, I often wonder what life would be like without it. Would the gifts I’ve gained alongside my anxiety vanish too? I suspect that I would miss them. So, as daunting as anxiety can be, if it helps shape me into the unique person I am today, then I’ll gladly embrace it.
