Tips for an Unforgettable Family Getaway in Yosemite

A few months back, we realized that Mia and the kids had just one glorious week of summer left while other kids were heading back to school. So, we decided to seize the moment and booked a three-day, two-night adventure in Yosemite. I hadn’t visited since childhood, and the kids were quickly becoming experts in embracing the #campvibes, so why not dive in?

We opted for a stay at the HOUSEKEEPING camp, not entirely sure what to expect but thrilled at the idea of not needing to set up our own tent. Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised: it was like a canvas cabin with one concrete wall and a canvas roof over the porch. Inside, we found a double bed, a bunk bed, ample storage, and even ELECTRICITY (perfect for charging phones and cameras)!

We lucked out with a spot right by the river. The kids immediately raced down to skip rocks and gaze at the magnificent mountains surrounding us. Yosemite is often praised for its breathtaking beauty, and it truly is stunning—the sheer force of nature hits you from every angle, almost overwhelming in the best possible way.

Here’s a rundown of our successful escapades:

  • JR. RANGER CAMPFIRE: This was an excellent introduction for the kids to the park’s wildlife. There was quite a bit of talk about bears, which made little Leo a bit anxious, but he found comfort in the idea that we could always offer a bear some s’mores if it visited. Overall, it was a valuable lesson about the wilderness and the importance of protecting it.
  • HIKING: We kicked off our first full day with a hike to Yosemite Falls. The trail was fairly easy with just a few small inclines, but arriving at a dry waterfall was a bit of a letdown. We decided to check out Bridalveil Fall next, having seen some water flowing when we entered the valley. The kids loved this hike; although it was steeper and longer, the end led to a beautiful waterfall and a rocky field for climbing closer to it. A few caution signs warned us to be careful, but that comes with any rock climbing adventure, right?
  • BIKING: Our bike ride turned out to be a major highlight! There are various rental spots in the park, but we headed to the Curry Village rental station. We rented a bike with a trailer for Mia and Leo while Max and I took a tandem bike. It took a moment to get used to it, but it was a blast. Max enjoyed being able to relax and take in the scenery without worrying about steering. The clearly marked bike paths meander through the valley floor, and we stopped for lunch at a lovely picnic area near Degnan’s Deli, which offers excellent vegetarian options. On our way back, we couldn’t resist stopping for ice cream in Curry Village.
  • SWIMMING: Following the river that bordered our tent cabin, we discovered an awesome swimming spot to cool off after biking. The kids had a blast; Max even ventured out to a log in the deeper section of the river to show off his cannonballs while Leo was content just rolling around in the sand. The water was chilly but refreshing, and the views were nothing short of spectacular!

Of course, we also enjoyed making s’mores, spotting deer and squirrels, sharing spooky stories, and gathering around the campfire. If you’re considering a trip to Yosemite with your little ones, hopefully, these tips will set you on the right path.

All in all, it was a short stay and a long drive, but the experience was utterly rewarding. The park’s environment varies greatly with the seasons, so we plan to return and explore it again at a different time of year!
