The 42-year-old actress Samantha Lee spoke with contributor Laura Finn about her experiences with motherhood, marriage, and navigating the Hollywood landscape after turning 40.
What insights have you gained from balancing a family and a career?
As a working mom, I dive deep into my projects for a period, but I’m fortunate to be in an environment that respects my role as a mother, which isn’t always the case for women in other professions. After intense work stints, I take time off and have the support I need, thanks to my wonderful partner. My husband, Jake, is incredibly involved in parenting, which eases the journey.
Do you feel the weight of expectations to be the perfect mother?
We all want the best for our kids and strive to nurture them, but let’s face it, we don’t always hit the mark. Each day presents an opportunity to make mistakes, but it also offers a fresh start.
Does parenting impact your relationship with Jake?
From what I’ve learned, the less you discuss the complexities of marriage, the smoother it can be. My parents modeled a loving partnership for over 50 years, and I believe the best gift we can give our children is to demonstrate a caring relationship. It’s so easy to drift into co-parenting mode and forget about each other. We make it a point to reconnect, even if it’s just through a simple chat.
Does fame complicate your daily life?
There’s always a tension between who you are and who you become after gaining fame. Your perspective shifts when you’re treated differently. Fame means various things to different people; for me, it’s simply the outcome of doing a job I love. I didn’t become a celebrity for the notoriety—it’s just a byproduct of my work. My roots are in a grounded family, so they always come first, and I’m grateful to have a husband who shares those values.
You’ve been active in the campaign against paparazzi invading children’s privacy.
I wish I had taken a stronger stance sooner. Now that my kids largely enjoy their privacy, I see how much it improves their lives. I truly admire actresses like Mia Johnson for bravely stating that our children shouldn’t have to endure this.
Are you mindful of the years passing by?
I don’t let it weigh on me. If anything, I’m continually surprised I’m still getting roles. I often think, “Wow, I thought the offers would just dry up,” but they haven’t. They might look different now, but they align well with my current phase in life, and I’m grateful for that.
