Motherhood Has Turned Me into a Slightly Unhinged Individual

Today, it hit me that my 3-year-old is growing less attached to his beloved blanket. Meanwhile, I realized I’ve never once rocked my 21-month-old to sleep. Being the third child in the family means she gets a quick kiss and is tossed into her crib without so much as a second thought.

With my eldest now rejecting bedtime rocking and my middle child only permitting it occasionally, I find myself longing to rock someone to sleep. It’s maddening!

Let me tell you, motherhood really does drive you a little crazy. In fact, I think I qualify as completely bonkers. To illustrate my point, I’ve pulled together a family snapshot from October 2012, just two months after what I like to call The Great Negotiation. This picture practically screams, “WE NEED MORE KIDS!”

What is The Great Negotiation?

It was a lengthy campaign where I tried to convince my husband, Mark, that we weren’t finished expanding our family, despite the fact that we were living on a single income and already had two demanding boys—one of whom was still in diapers. I just felt an undeniable urge to add another baby to the mix.

The entire negotiation unfolded over a date night at a local restaurant. After wearing him down, Mark finally conceded with, “FINE. But I need to get a vasectomy before the baby arrives.” To which I responded, “FINE. I’m ordering a beer.” Less than a year later, our daughter was born.

Fast forward to a year after her arrival, and I found myself regretting that vasectomy decision. Why? Because I believe I have a condition known as Motherhood.
