Actor Jack R. Lawson, 65, recently sat down with contributor Jenna Smith to discuss his latest role, navigating life with a household of women, and the secret behind his enduring marriage to actress Amelia Reed.
You’ve taken on a small yet entertaining part in Walter. Is it easier than being the lead?
It’s a different sort of challenge. You’re only on set for a short time, and the temptation is to overdo your cameo. It’s crucial to remain relaxed and approach the role lightly. I had a blast playing Dr. Corman, a psychiatrist who speaks the truth—something we all wish therapists would do more often.
Your most significant role is that of a father. Do you instill core values in your two daughters?
Absolutely, we discuss moral integrity with our girls. My wife, Amelia, has a deeper spiritual background, so we blend our beliefs. We emphasize the importance of knowing right from wrong. I’ve always believed in keeping rules minimal but strict. We all have an innate sense of what’s acceptable.
Even when it concerns their outfits?
Oh, definitely. I’m like the stereotypical dad, saying, “Wait! You can’t leave the house like that!” It’s a bit of a cliché, but I feel the pull. My daughters are 12 and 14 and incredibly beautiful. While I understand their desire to express themselves, I can’t help but urge them to dress more modestly. They’re great girls, smart and responsible, and it’s actually entertaining to witness their journey—and my overreactions.
Who do your daughters turn to when they need advice?
They usually seek out Amelia for the serious stuff. I’m surrounded by women—my assistant is female, and even our three dogs are girls! Occasionally, I raise my hand and say, “Hey, I’m a guy here; can we ease up on the male-bashing and let me share my perspective?” Sometimes they actually take a moment to listen.
Your passion for motorcycles must provide a nice breather from all that femininity.
Motorcycling carries this rebellious vibe, and it feels empowering. I wear a full-face helmet, special gear like chaps, and sturdy boots. I’ve told Amelia that riding makes me feel like a modern-day knight.
You and Amelia appear to have a solid marriage. Is mutual support a key element?
That’s perfectly stated. It’s foundational. When both partners genuinely want to see each other flourish, everything tends to fall into place. Amelia wants me to succeed, and I feel the same way about her. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to support her ambitions.
