Dear Leonard,
Though our paths have crossed only a handful of times—perhaps three or four at best—I find myself compelled to write to you. It feels a bit awkward, given our limited interactions, but our shared connection to the legendary Vulcan character binds us in a unique way. While I may not have much to offer in terms of personal anecdotes, the lasting impact of your work resonates deeply with audiences everywhere, transcending generations.
This bond might not speak to our true selves, but it unites us as actors, dedicated to breathing life into Spock for as long as his legacy endures. I sincerely hope that this iconic figure, representing human logic and compassion, will continue to inspire for centuries to come.
I believe our first meeting was at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas during the summer of 2009 when I was just 14. Backstage, before joining Zachary Quinto on stage, we had a brief encounter. I can’t recall the exact words exchanged, but I vividly remember your demeanor—humble and kind. It was refreshing to see that your fame had not clouded your genuine goodness, a quality I had always admired from afar.
Regrettably, the details of our conversation slipped from my memory, but perhaps words are mere vessels for feelings, and I sensed nothing but warmth from you.
When we stepped onto that stage alongside Zach in front of an audience filled with devoted Trekkies, it was a surreal experience. There’s a video of that moment on YouTube, should you care to relive it.
That day remains one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. We stood there—three individuals with a shared history—symbolizing a cultural phenomenon that has made its mark on the world. Your comment about my eagerness to appear charming, “He’s not at all like he is in the movie, is he?” was some of the most insightful feedback I’ve ever received. After sharing a hug with Zach, you turned to the audience and exclaimed, “Isn’t that wonderful?” Indeed, it was a moment that words cannot fully capture.
Thank you, Leonard, for your incredible humanity. The world is grateful for your presence and the joy you have brought to so many. Live long and prosper, Mr. Nimoy.
Warm wishes,
Jamie Carter
