Parenting is a wild ride, and to survive in my house of quirky little characters, I’ve found myself engaging in some truly odd behavior. If my younger self could witness it all, she’d likely be begging for an escape from this whimsical whirlwind. Yet, we find ourselves doing these things, whether out of sheer exhaustion or the pursuit of fun. Here are a dozen of the most peculiar antics I’ve managed as a parent:
- Solo Shopping for Odd Items: I’ve purchased a slingshot, glitter pens, Play-Doh, a plastic sword, a rainbow loom, legos, and stickers for my kids without any coercion. Yes, all on my own.
- Toy Bathroom Shenanigans: I once held a toy elephant over the sink, pretending it was peeing, after declaring to my daughter that her stuffed animal couldn’t sit on the toilet.
- Encouraging Opinions: I’ve actively urged my kids to share their thoughts. (Why did I think this was a good idea?)
- Silly Songs to Motivate: I’ve sung the wrong lyrics to popular songs, dancing like a trained monkey to coax my child into doing something they were reluctant about, like “Let it go! Let it go! Let that poop come o-o-out!”
- Giving Gum to Toddlers: I intentionally gave a piece of gum to my three-year-old. Yes, you read that right.
- Lost in My Own Home: There have been moments when I frantically searched for my phone, only to realize that I was talking on it the entire time.
- Stuffed Animal Tucking Mishap: I once tucked in one of my daughter’s stuffed animals, creating a chain reaction of bedtime tasks that felt endless.
- The Mushroom Trick: I misled my daughter into believing the mushroom she was eating was chicken, only to find amusement when she actually liked it.
- Poop Parade: I’ve been so astonished by one of my child’s bowel movements that I called my spouse in to witness it—not once, but several times.
- Bookstore Dilemma: In a moment of weakness, I told my kids they could pick anything they wanted at the bookstore. Talk about a lesson in indecision!
- Independence Gone Wrong: We’ve encouraged our children to be self-sufficient, and now they believe they can do everything alone—even when they do it all wrong.
- Administering Suppositories: Yes, I’ve given someone else a suppository. That’s a parenting milestone, right?
