Karma has come back to haunt me in the form of a vibrant purple dress that my daughter insists on wearing almost every day. I suspect this is a cosmic payback for my childhood pickiness about clothing—a trait that once made my kind grandmother say to my mom, “I would never let a two-year-old dictate her wardrobe.”
That was my stance too… until I encountered the unyielding fashion opinions of my own little girl. If she’s forced into attire she disapproves of, she will complain endlessly! One time, she held a cardigan closed for hours just to conceal a cute white shirt she deemed “too straight.”
Here’s a glimpse into the wonderfully peculiar reasons my three-year-old feels the need to change her clothes throughout the day:
- There’s a bone on it (a bow).
- Her friend borrowed this sweatshirt once, and now it’s “too hot.”
- These pants aren’t bouncing high enough.
- This coat tickles her neck when she swallows.
- She forgot that jeans aren’t compatible with her legs today.
- Halloween shirts are simply too spooky.
- These tights are suffocating her feet.
- Her brother simply breathed on her.
- She recalls an itchy tag on this shirt, and even though it’s cut out, it still holds bad vibes.
- These shoes lack the required “dance” factor.
- This dress feels “sad.”
- She received a stamp in gymnastics on her arm, so now clothes can’t brush against it—ever!
- Her brother claimed she doesn’t resemble a superhero.
- The owl on her pajamas is staring at her while she sleeps.
- She can’t recall why she chose this outfit.
- The purpletude isn’t purpletastic enough, the sparkles lack sparkle, and the stripes aren’t stripy enough either.
- There’s even a single drop of water on it!
- She saw a picture of herself in her favorite dress and now insists on wearing it since she hasn’t seen it since yesterday.
- The bottom of this outfit is just plain “crazy.”
- Her socks are too heavy for her shoes.
- There seems to be a miscommunication; she clearly requested a “princess party dress.”
- There’s a hole in it (but there absolutely isn’t).
- This shirt is a permanent resident in the drawer (and it truly is).
- It won’t go on the right way (though it actually will).
- The elastic waistband is hurting her feelings.
