To the Parents Who Make Me Feel Better About My Parenting Journey

If you’re looking to boost your self-esteem as a parent, consider volunteering for a school field trip. I recently accompanied my child’s second-grade class on an outing to the theater, and let me tell you, it was quite the eye-opener. I observed many parents who seemed completely unbothered by their children’s slightly chaotic appearances—think unbuttoned shirts, mismatched pants, untied shoelaces, and even some questionable hygiene choices. And this was a field trip to the theater, no less!

Perhaps these parents have already embraced a truth that the rest of us are still grappling with: kids can be gross, and sometimes it’s best to just let it be. I owe a huge thank you to these parents because they made me feel a whole lot better about my own sometimes less-than-perfect parenting skills.

Heartfelt Appreciation

So here’s my heartfelt appreciation:

To the parents of the child with a face that looked like it had been through a battle with snot: At first, I wondered if anyone had checked on him before leaving the house. But seeing him made me glance at my own little one, and oh boy—my kid had a few boogers of his own! I might have told him to eat breakfast and brush his teeth, but did I actually look at him this morning? Hmmm…

To the parent of the charming girl who regaled me with the story of her mother spending “practically all day” removing lice from her hair: First of all, my hair was tied back in a flash. Secondly, thank you! I now feel much better about the multiple lice infestations I endured as a child, and I’m slightly less horrified at the thought of my kids potentially facing that same fate. And yes, my head itches just thinking about it.

To the parents of the boy boasting about his new motorhome, four-wheeler, and “really big” pool with a slide: I appreciate the reminder that our short-sale from seven years ago doesn’t look so bad in comparison. By the way, can we arrange a playdate so my kids can get a taste of your impressive toy collection?

To the parents of the child whose lunch consisted of a pre-packaged PB&J, a giant fruit roll-up, a chocolate rice crispy treat, Cheez-Its, and chocolate milk: You’ve made me feel pretty good about my lunch choices for my kid. I might be a bit judgmental here, but I can’t help it! However, maybe your kid doesn’t go around chewing on the dog’s tail or scraping the paint off the walls like mine does after consuming sugar-laden snacks.

To the parents of the child who seemed to be lost every few minutes—running ahead, lagging behind, or hiding from the group: Oh wait… that was my child. Forget I said anything.

To the parents of the kid who needed water every ten seconds and kept asking me to hold his hat and jacket: Thank you for reinforcing my decision to teach my kid independence. Except when it comes to tying his shoes; he just learned how to do that two weeks ago! (It’s not my fault Velcro shoes are always on sale!)

To the parents of the girl who proudly declared her breath stank on the bus, and when asked if she had brushed her teeth, loudly proclaimed “no” while showing off her five silver crowns: Thanks for providing the motivation to put my kids in headlocks tonight and brush their teeth twice. I’d rather deal with lice than those dental bills!

To all these parents: Each of you, in your own unique way, made me feel so much better about my parenting. Thank you for showing me that I’m not alone in this sticky, sometimes overwhelming journey of parenthood.
