Every parent has that eye-opening realization when they see their own parents as more than just parental figures. Maybe it hit you when you overheard them discussing their younger years, or perhaps it was during a family gathering when an uncle decided to sneak some spirits into your mom’s drink, leaving her in a rather entertaining state before a big event.

These moments shatter the illusion that our parents are infallible beings, revealing them as complex individuals—just like us. This thought made me reflect on my own children and how, one day, they might transform their innocent admiration for me into a sense of embarrassment. Right now, they adore me and want to be by my side constantly—it’s both heartwarming and exhausting.

But I know that phase won’t last forever. Soon enough, they might beg me to drop them off a few blocks away from school to avoid being seen with me. I can only hope that, once they navigate the tumultuous teenage years, they’ll come to appreciate me as an individual again.

To help facilitate this, I’ve decided to remind them that I’m more than just their mother. So here goes, my dear children:

  • Just like I learned about my own parents, you were not delivered by a stork. Do the math!
  • Yes, I may be “seasoned,” but I can still hit the dance floor like a pro. While I can’t predict what tunes I’ll be grooving to in the future, let’s just say I’ll always have a soft spot for classics like “Baby Got Back.”
  • The reason I get a bit anxious about you heading off to college is that I once polished off a bottle of Hawkeye Vodka while my friend and I tried to tackle our Philosophy midterms. Spoiler alert: we didn’t ace it.
  • Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny all share the same handwriting because… well, I think you can figure that out.
  • I’m not really “allergic” to cats, and the radio didn’t stop playing Justin “Beaver” songs because he got in trouble. Sometimes, I do bend the truth a little—only in situations like this!
  • I had my share of secrets from my parents too. Trust me, they usually found out.
  • I have celebrity crushes, and while I won’t spill the details here, you might catch a glimpse of that on my blog.
  • Chores like doing laundry, taking out the trash, or tackling algebra? Yeah, I think they’re a total drag as well.

With love,
Your Mom
