You Might Be a Grandma If… by Sarah McKinley

You might be a grandma if:

  • When your daughter calls you in a panic about the toddlers turning the bathroom into a water park, you chuckle and ask for photos. (Remember when your kids did this? You were the one hiding in the bathroom, crying.)
  • Your grandchild requests Cheetos for breakfast, and you enthusiastically reply, “Absolutely! Cheetos sound great instead of oatmeal.” You even convince yourself they must contain cheese, which is a dairy product that helps build strong bones. (Your own kids? They were strictly oatmeal or eggs every morning.)
  • When your grandchild innocently tells the delivery person, “Grandma has funny old boobs,” you beam with pride. After all, she’s talking about your “old boobs,” not anyone else’s. (This was not nearly as amusing when your kids said something similar.)
  • The phone rings, and you find yourself immersed in a delightful babble session with a fourteen-month-old that seems to last forever. You feel like royalty receiving a call from the Pope, except this is even better.
  • Your daughter recounts a dramatic twenty-minute meltdown in the grocery store, and you’re all ears, laughing at your grandchild’s fiery spirit. (You definitely didn’t find it funny when your own kids threw similar tantrums.)
  • Sharing a single bed with your granddaughter feels like the best gift ever. Waking up to her bright-eyed smile is pure joy. (When your kids crawled into your bed, mornings felt more like waking up to a grumpy bear.)
  • You find yourself singing silly songs multiple times a day, mastering all the dance moves that go along with them. (With your kids, you turned off that incessant music after the first thirty repetitions.)
  • Discovering little critters like tree frogs, ants, and fireflies becomes a delightful adventure. (When your kids were little, you just swatted them away and kept moving, always in a hurry.)
  • As you reflect on those chaotic years, a tear might escape your eye. You find yourself missing those days, realizing they were truly some of the best times of your life.

And that’s when you know you’re officially a grandma.
