When it comes to birthday parties, can we please call it quits on the tradition of party favors? Seriously, enough with the stale candy and tacky trinkets. We’ve all seen the half-eaten Tootsie Rolls, the crooked Slinkys, and rubber ducks that smell like a chemical plant. Why do we keep piling on this plastic nonsense?
It’s time to acknowledge that sometimes, less is more. We should say goodbye to these party favors—I’m done with them. And I’m curious to know who’s on board with me. My friend, author Emma Larson, feels the same way. In her piece for a parenting magazine, she posed a great question: “Why are we as parents continuing this pointless ritual of handing out junk at the end of a party?”
Exactly! We’ve moved on from smoking indoors and perming our hair, so why do we still feel the need to offer bags stuffed with worthless items to thank kids for attending our children’s celebrations? Thank them for coming? Seriously? Wasn’t the cake, games, and fun enough? I’m standing my ground on this one. (And yes, I might be stomping my foot a little because I feel strongly about it.)
Unless we’re on a mission to rid the world of leftover Jolly Ranchers, I can’t fathom why we still hand out goodie bags. It’s time to cut the clutter.
Let’s bid farewell to those party favors. I don’t want them, and I certainly don’t want to give them.
A couple of years back, after a birthday bash I hosted for my daughter, a little girl approached me. I thought she was going to express her gratitude. Nope! She was actually demanding her party favor. She extended her hand, expecting something in return. Part of me wanted to give her a stern talking-to; another part wanted to high-five her for her boldness. In the end, I did nothing. But looking back, considering my aversion to these little gifts, I realize I should have just handed her two.

In summary, it’s high time we reconsider the need for party favors. Let’s shift our focus from cheap junk to celebrating the joy of gathering without the clutter.
