Sometimes, my kids just have to wait. Whether I’m in the midst of whipping up dinner or folding laundry, I can’t always drop everything to help my daughter with her shoe that she insisted on putting on herself. It’s an unavoidable part of life, and I believe it’s important for my children to grasp this concept early on.
Of course, there are moments when they need my immediate attention. A loud crash followed by tears, a sudden bout of sickness, or raised voices from their room—these situations warrant a quick response. However, I also make choices to put tasks aside to dance with them to the Curious George theme song or assist with a shoe before finishing up the cheese grating. But I don’t do this every time.
I refuse to raise children who think they are the center of the universe. They are incredibly special, but part of my job as a parent is to prepare them to be respectful, competent, and successful individuals in society. This means they must learn to wait, to be patient, and to find contentment in their own thoughts until I can give them my full attention.
So, my kids don’t always come first, and I hope that one day they’ll appreciate these lessons. If not, well, let’s hope I can afford their therapy!
