Dear Little One,
Hello there! It’s your mom here, bursting with excitement to finally meet you.
Your nursery is almost set up in our new home. While it was bittersweet to leave the city, we made the move so that you and your big brother could attend top-notch schools. Now, we have a spacious playroom, a vast backyard, and four cozy bedrooms for you, your brother, and maybe even another sibling in the future!
We’ve been eagerly counting down the days until you arrive. What’s holding you up, sweetheart? Are you being considerate and letting your first-time mom friends catch up? That’s sweet, but seriously, everyone is either pregnant or welcoming their first or second child. You should have seen our Christmas cards this year—half of them were birth announcements! Don’t worry, you won’t be stepping, or rather crawling, on any toes.
Are you trying to teach me a lesson about patience? I know it’s not my strong suit. I can manage just fine with your brother, but throw in a traffic jam or some tech glitches, and I quickly lose my cool.
Are you going to take your time like me? I’ve always been a slowpoke. Grandma used to tease me that I was the last one out of the school doors!
Do you worry that my love for your brother means there won’t be enough space for you? That’s just not true! My love for him won’t lessen my excitement to welcome you. The reason we want you in our family is that we adore your big brother and can’t wait to see the bond you two will share.
Are you concerned about making me nauseous? Don’t fret! We have three bathrooms in this house, and I’d gladly pay my dues to the porcelain throne for you.
Thinking about causing me back pain? That’s what prenatal yoga is for. I’m ready to sign up!
Do you fear I’ll be disappointed if you turn out to be a boy (which I suspect you might be) instead of a girl (as your dad thinks)? Little man, I’ll embrace you with open arms. Plus, that means I won’t have to learn how to clean up after a girl!
I think about you constantly—more than I care to admit. I dream of snuggling with you after feeding, watching you take your first steps, and holding back tears on your first day of Kindergarten.
So, what’s taking so long? Why can’t I get pregnant? Sometimes, I worry that your brother’s arrival was a miraculous fluke, and that having more children isn’t in the cards for me. Please prove those fears wrong and join our family. There’s more than enough love here for everyone.
Your big brother will start preschool soon, and Grandpa asked what I’ll do during that time. I’d love to spend that time with you, but until you arrive, I’ll just be here…waiting.
With all my love,
Mom
