A friend of mine welcomed her first baby just a month after I had my second. Lately, she’s been sharing on social media how motherhood has transformed her life. She talks about her aching back, the extra weight she can’t shake off, and wonders when she might feel like her old self again.

My response? You won’t. Life as you knew it has irrevocably changed.

  • Your back will likely always have that nagging twinge.
  • Your breasts may sag a little more than before.
  • Your belly might never lose that stubborn pooch.
  • Your hips could remain a tad wider.
  • And let’s not even get started on your hair, skin, or bladder control—they will be different, for better or worse.

Sleep? Forget about it. You might find yourself living in nursing bras for a while. Privacy in the bathroom? That’s a luxury you won’t enjoy for a few years. Prepare for a newfound fascination with all things poop-related. Dust-free floors? A thing of the past. And good luck wearing anything unstained for a while. Regular haircuts and manicures? You can kiss those goodbyes for a bit. Laundry and dishes? They will pile up more often than not.

Yes, all of that is true. But what I didn’t mention to her is this:

  • Your smile will shine brighter than ever.
  • Your laughter will ring with a deeper joy.
  • Your eyes will sparkle with a new light.
  • Your arms will be filled with love.
  • Your heart will feel like it’s bursting with affection.
  • Your capacity for love will expand beyond measure.

So, after you bring a child (or two, or three, or more) into this world, you will never be the same again. But that’s perfectly okay, because you won’t want to be.
