13 Thoughts Moms Have While at the Orthodontist

Every two months, I find myself spending about an hour at the orthodontist’s office. By my calculations, that’s going to add up to around 72 hours by the time my youngest finishes their treatment. Despite the frequency of these visits, I can’t help but get stuck in a loop of familiar thoughts each time. Here’s what crosses my mind:

  1. Did I apologize for being late again?
  2. I know they went over everything, but does my child really need all these devices? I thought their teeth looked fine.
  3. Cookies? Shouldn’t orthodontists provide some snacks? I wonder if they’ll ever add a frozen yogurt bar like my friend’s orthodontist.
  4. My own orthodontist was quite stern, and my teeth have returned to their overbite glory days. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen here.
  5. I genuinely love this orthodontist. I feel like I can trust him.
  6. Why is everyone here smiling all the time? Is there some nitrous oxide I don’t know about? Can I have some too?
  7. What kind of genetic twist means all three of my kids need braces, while my sister’s kids don’t?
  8. Is it totally bonkers to consider having my son’s braces removed for his bar mitzvah? It might be a little insane, but think of the photos!
  9. Should I consider getting a different job just to cover the orthodontic bills?
  10. Seriously, I adore this orthodontist. He just spent five minutes explaining to my son why he needs to wear his retainer, and he was patient—not a single threat in sight.
  11. Those before-and-after photos look amazing. Maybe I should look into getting Invisalign myself.
  12. Honestly, it looks better than a facelift. Maybe I’ll think about it after my third child is done with all their treatments…
  13. I will definitely miss this place.

I know I’m not alone in these musings while waiting for my kids’ orthodontic appointments. After all, braces are a rite of passage for many teens—about 4.5 million teenagers underwent orthodontic work in 2012, according to the American Association of Orthodontists.

At least I can take comfort in the fact that my child isn’t going the DIY route with their teeth. This is a concerning trend where individuals are turning to dubious online sources for orthodontic advice.

So, that’s parenthood for you: ensuring our kids have healthy teeth since the ’70s, all while battling boredom and shelling out cash.
